PRIVATE advices state that Messrs. Brecken and McDonald are general favorites among the representatives of the Dominion at Ottawa. The marked difference between the calibre of our past and present representatives is re- cognized by all.

DiprHERIA and scarlatina are making fearful ravages in St. John's, Nfl’d, especially amongst the young people. Last week was re- markable for the large bill of mortality. In the course of forty-eight hours no fewer than thirty four succumbed to the disease.

Tue Very Rev. Dr. McDonald will deliver a Lecture to-morrow evening, in St. Patrick’s Hall, on ‘‘Fond Reminiscences.” Judging from the manner in which the reverend gentle- man acquitted himself on former occasions, = may augur fer those who attend a rich reat.

Tue fatal disease, known as mad itch, is os’ at a very alarming extent all through Central Illinois. It seems that there is no remedy yet discovered which will cure the stock when once attacked with the dis- ease. Within the last ten days over 300 head cate have died ia Illinois from the itch.

Tue Merchants Bank of Toronto, on Satur- day last, notified Mr. Thomas Snarr, uncle of the absconding coal dealer, W. S. Snarr, that they held his paper to the amount of $22,500, drawn by the defaulter. Mr. Snarr informed the bank officials that the notes were all forgeries, and that he had not endorsed one of them. Altogether, the notes in existence are to the amount of $35,000, drawn by ae and purporting to be backed by his uncle.

Tue following cable appears in the Toronto Globe of the 6th, dated London, March 5 : ‘‘Edward Hanlan commenced his regular training to-day, and is in geod hands preparing for the coming match. Hlawdon will proceed to Newcastle-on- Tyne in a fortnight. Hanlan’s boat ar- rived on Saturday in good _ con- dition. Hanlan has quite recovered from the effects of his sea sickness and is now in first-class health. The prospects are in every way satisfactory.”

A Moytreat despatch announces the arrest of Jean 8S. Paquette, Cashire of the Hochelaga Bank, for embezzlement. He misappropriated from $50,000 to $100,000 of the funds of the bank in private speculations. Golding,from whom he bought a phosphate mine for $77.500, was arrested for that amount on the 6th, at the suit of the bank. Golding has now en- tered a-cilaim for $100,000 damages for false arrest against the bank as a corporation and the President personally. Golding is an Eng- lishman, but has been a resident for some time in Canada, having identified himself with the phesphate interests of the Dominion.

Tue annual meeting of the members of the Benevolent Irish Society was held in St. Patrick’s Hall last evening. The attendance was large. We are pleased to see that this benevolent institution is in good standing. Last year the call for aid from it was very

eat, and the Treasure’s report shows that F186 was expended in the relief of the poor and the burying of the dead. The members have decided to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by @ procession in the forenoon —in which they will be joined by the St. Patrick’s Total Ab- stinence Society—and by a grand musical and literary entertainment in the evening—the proceeds of which will be expended in aid of the poor. Orrawa, March 10.

In the House to-day Mr. Langevin intro duced a Bill to amend the Post Office Act, by allowing Inspectors to examine witnesses on oath.

Dr. Tupper, in reply to Mr. Weldon, said that steps had been taken to replace St. John breakwater.

Mr. McDonald, P. E. L., in moving for cor- respondence respecting the practice of mack- erel seining in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, de- scribed the destructiveness of the system, and dwelt on ths importance of preventing it.

Mr. Fortin condemned the practice, saying that mackerel and cod would be exterminated in twenty years if it were not stopped.

Mr. Brecken would rather see the Fishery Award thrown into the sea, than the seining of mackerel within the three mile limit con- tinued, for one fish secured by the seine one thousand are Cestroyed.

Mr. Flynn spoke of this wholesale destruc- tion of fish by seines, and urged the Gov- ernment to do something.

Mr. J. C. Pope said the Government was fully alive to the value of the fisheries and the evil of seining, and would do all that could be done to remedy the evil complained of.

Orders passed for certain Canada Pacific Railway contracts and for tenders received for building the Northern Light.

The debate on the Northern Light was ad- journed.

On Mr. Yeo’s motion for correspondence relative to the appropriation of the Fishery Award, Mr. Rebertson (Shelbourne) argued at length that a portion of the money should be employed in the improvemeat of the river fisheries, because the deep sea fisheries would be destroyed at the expiration of the Wash- ington Treaty.

The bank of the Thames from Putney to Mortlake were alive with people to-day on the occasssion of the boat race between Francis Emmett, of Jarrow-on-Tyne, and Wallace Ross, of St. John, N. B.

Ross took the lead and kept it to the close, beating Emmet with ease.

A correspondent at Cape Town says Col. Pearson, after repulsing the Zulus attack, which occured on Feb. 13, burned Entimedi.

A dispatch from Kimberley reports that the Zulus burned eight kraals belonging to friend- ly Kaffirs, near Dombeig, and killed the in- babitants.

All fear of a successful invasion of Natal has disappeared.

The Cape Town Argus publishes the follow- ing: ‘‘The Zulus now desire peace on the terms consistent with tribel independence.”

At New Glasgow, on the 27th Feb., after a lingering illness, Mr. James Laird, sen., aged 70 years. He was the only brother of the late Hon, Alex. Laird, of the same place. The dec2ased was endowed with superior intelléct- ual powers, and was a man of the strictest in- tegrity and manly independence.- He was also distinguished for his intelligent, unaffect- ed, cheerful and deep-toned piety. He ex-) erted a highly beneficial influence in the com-| munity in which he lived nearly sixty years.
