James Heath was brought up for trial, at Louisville, Ky., on the 14th ipst., charged with larceny. The crime with whieh Hesth was charged, the larceny of acouple of wsealskin cloaks, was admitted by the defence, but the plea urged was that the accused, being a klepiomaniac, eguld not be held re- sponsible for the at. The first witness introduced to prove the prisoner’s pecu- liar weakness was the boy’s own father, who testified to the fact that the boy was born on May 21, 1863. The mother had so worn herselt down by mental excitement and labor for the Southern soldiers, that after the birth of her child she was uuabie to raise it. The doctors said that unless the child received milk fromthe breast it could bot live. A colored wet nurse was hir ed, and about the time the child was old enough to be weaned she was discover ed to be an incorrigible thief, and thas had the child drawn in with the life- giving fluid.seeds cf a most deplorable habit.

The contract made for lighting the town of Liverpool by wick lamps, during the year 1819, was rencered void by the misplacing of a comma in the advertisement, thus ‘The lamps at present are about 4,050, and have in general two spouts each, composed of vot less than 20 threads of cotton.” The contractors would have proceeded t> furnish each lamp with the ssid 20 threads; but this beiug half the usual quantity, the commissioners discovered that tbe difference arose from the comma following, instead of preceeding the word “each.” In the following instance it waa no doubt a bacbelor who, in setting up the toast, “Woman, without her, man would be a savage !” got the comma in the wrong place, and made the sentence read, ‘“‘Woman, without her man, would
