Already the euns of the squadron were beginniny to thunder forth their wel- come, alii soon the vessel was wreathed in smoke, and quivering beneath the discharges of ber heavy ordnance, as Admiral Nelson touched ber deck, sur- rounded by a brilliant staff.

Standing near the edge of the quar- ter deck, and watching the scene with

about eighteen. He was dressed simply but neatly, and his cheeks glowed and his eves kindled as he watebed the ex citing events that were going on around him. As be returned the salutes of the officers, the admiral chanced to observe the Jad. ;

‘Who is this?’ he asked, turning to

the captain of the vessel. & ‘He's a young lad that came on board a few days ago,’ replied the cap- tain. ‘He insists on seeing you, sir, as he says he has something of importance to say to you.’

‘Well, my lad,’ said the admiral kindly,— speak out freely.’

‘If you please, sir,’ said the boy, ‘I've come to ask you to take me to gea with you,’

‘Is that all you have to say you young scamp ?’ asked the captain sharp ly.

" ‘vet him alone,’ said the admiral, laughing. * What position do you want?’ he a-ked, turning to the boy.

‘If you would take meas your ecabin- boy, sir,’ said the lad, I should be very glad.’

‘ That's a poor chance for you, if you wieh to rive above it, said the admiral kindby.
