Happenings of The Week

The King has approved the in- troduction of a uniform black bo- lero and white blouse for wear by W. R. N. S. officers to adapt their day uniform for wear when mess undress or mess dress is worn by naval officers. The new garments have also been approved by the Queen. who is Comniandant-in- Chief of the VV. R. N. S.. and by the Duchess of Kent. as Chief Commandant of the service. They will probably be introduced early next )'car. The new dress has been designed by Mr. Victor Stic- bci.

It will be of interest here to learn tiiat traditional Remem- brance Day ceremonies will take place Nov. 11 at the Cenotaph on Dominion Square. Service per- soniiel and Caiiadian Legion meni- bcrs are urged to attend divine service before assembling for lay- ing wreaths at 10:40 a.m. After the Cenotaph ceremony, there will be a parade of veterans and units of the Navy. Army and Air Force. Salute will be taken in front of the United Services Club on Sher- hrooke Street west. Lt.-Col. George C. Macliuin will be parade marshal. and Montreal District Commander Pius McDonald will be in charge of Cenotaph ceremon- ies. Navy. Army and Air Force official representatives are Lt.- Cmdr. J. B. Bugden, Lt.-Col. P. M. Desautels, Quebec Army Com- mzind. and SXL R. G. Middlemiss. Air Defence Command. Police Inspector Frank Rawley will be in charge of traffic.

I thought I had found the cause and cure as I was able to keep a pat- ient free of epileptic attacks for two years by washing out his stomach twice I week. He was moved to another city and attacks returned. He was bitten by 8 C-1001' estic cat that had turned wild and the attacks did not return for three years-then the attacks re- turned. Then the discovery was made that cutting down on liq- uids and using the drug pheno- barbital Instead of the bromides could prevent the attacks of epil- epsy or keep them under control This patient has now been kept free of attacks for several years.

Until recently, cutting down on liquids and starches and increas- ing fat foods has been the rou- tine treatment for epilepsy, or seizures resembling epilepsy. In the Journal of Pediatrics, Dr. A. E. Walker states that most cases of epilepsy can be successfully treated by phenobarbital and other anticonvulsive drugs. These drugs will prevent attacks in 50 per cent of cases and grcaty de- crease selzpres in another 25 per cent.

What about the 25 per cent in which these drugs are not effect- ive? -

In cases which resist the action of anlicoiivulsive drugs. Dr. Walker states that Sill"-Ilcal treat- ment may be considered. Surgery is the removal of some local or local condition present in the brain, which type of epilepsy is diagnosed or discovered by electro- encephalogram: (X-rays of the brain and observation of the movements of the brain). "The character of the seizures is so im- portant for the diagnosis that at times it is advisable to bring on an attack by injecting pentylene-tct- razole into a vein. which attacks have all the characteristics of a spontaneous or natural attack of epilepsy."

In discussing Dr. Walker's article. an editorial in the Journal of the American Medical Associa- tion states that the usual local or cortical type cf epilepsy is discov- ered by an examination, hy x-my and cicctroencephalograph; it is usually an old scar on the brain or some "expanding" disturbance such as a brain abscess. cysts or other growths. All these condi- tions have a common feature, that is the presence of groups of cells iganglioril in which the circula- tion has been interfered with to such an extent that the life of the cells is threatened. Operation consists in opening the abscess. cutting of an adhesion. opening of a cyst or removal of B tumor and then the complete removal of all brain tissue in which the circula- tion has been disturbed.
