Consistent Inconsistency.

Mr. McKenzie found fault with Sir John MeDonald for drawing $5,000 a year for each of the thirteen Ministers, or $65,000 a year for all; and on the 20th May, 1873, when Sir John proposed to increase his own salary as Prime Minister to $8,000, and to give each of his twelve colleagues $7,000, Mr. McKenzie moved a resolution to the effect that the salaries of the Cabinet should not exceed $75.000 in all. ‘This was in the good times when the revenue was flush and every thirtieth of June brought its surplus, Yet since the hard times set in five years ago, bringing enormous deficits and sorely

THE McCAtTHY MURDER.

Dorncnesrer, Aug, 15. Dr. Scott, of Moncton, was recalled. He identified the boards of the wagon as the ones examined by him. They were not changed in his possession, yet there is a stain comparatively fresh on the board he did not discover until brought here. He found one suspicious stain, and on examin- ing it he found it was not a blocd stain. A bad body remaining some time clothed the hlood would transfuse through the skin.

To Hon. Mr. Hannington—The blood on McCarthy’s shirt was not caused by such transfusion He would not swear the stain was not on when examined before. On entting a sliver off the Doctor said it was stained, not saturated. He made no chem- ical analysis of the wagon boards during this court. (Here a bristling of feathers with a timely interposition took place. The stone found in the Seadoue was produced. He examined the spots on the stone and found them to be lime or caused by lime. The cross-examination took nearly two hours.

Re-examined hy Mr. Palmner—The blood running along the crack must necessarily stain both boards. After some minor ques- tions the shirt collar and bosom were pro-

duced, and witness said he found no blood clot opon it. Hon. Mr. Hannington was allowed to

cross-examine again, Mr. Palmer objecting and arguing agaist it as an advantage not usually accorded in Court. In this: case His Honor allowed it m order to enquire all the information obtainable. Witness said blood would not flow after death. The jury examined the wagon boards.

To the Court.—-He thinks if the stone had been examined when found the lime spots would have been discovered if there. Lime spots would turn color when dry. This wit- ness oecupied the whole forenoon, and did not produce anything specially interesting to the public. The prosecution will not pro- duce many rebutting witnesses.

Stephen McCarthy recalled : I was board- ing at Warman’s about October last. I left my overcoat at Osborne’s for safety, as I had no trunk at my boarding house. I left it there for about six weeks. Osborne told me he had worn my coat once ; it was light brown. IL might have told Osborne that he could wear it. It was the 14th Oetober when I left the coat,

Montreal Gazette :—* When Sir Francis Hineks took the duty off tea, he acecompan- ied the concession by such legislation—the ten per cent. differential duty—as tended to the enconragement of the long voyage and tothe building up of a foreign trade for Canada. Mr. Cartwright put a duty on tea, but he repealed the ten per cent. law, and asa consequence that foreign trade which was becoming a most important fac- tor in the country’s prosperity, was de- stroyed, and with ‘it the grocery business was transferred to New York instead of being as formerly, done in Montreal. The duty under Mr. Cartwright’s tariff is higher than under that of Sir Francis Hincks, but the protection has been removed and the trade destroyed. This is simply an illus- tration of the essential difference between the two parties. The Conservatives con-

fostering of the trade of the country in the arrangement of the tariff; the Clear Grits held that they have nothing to do with such considerations, that Governments should not attempt to bmld up trade and com- merece by means of a fiseal policy, that their only duty is to collect revenue. ”
