William B. Ferguson was burn in Marshfleld. Prince Edward island. November llth. 1875. His parents were Senator Donald Fer4 guson and Elizabeth (Scott) Fergu- son. He attended the Mai-shfield school, later Prince of Wales Col- legs and graduated from McGill University in 1896 with first-rank honours in classics. Having secured his Ph.D. from Cornell he studied in Berlin, Ger- many, and travelled not only 011 the mainland of Greece but on the islands of the Aegean Sea, in Asia Minor, Syria. Egypt. Italy and Sicily. ,

He possess- ed in an exceptional degree, the ability to make students. even.in a lecture course, feel that the search for truth was I joint enter- prise. Yet his lectures, flowing naturally from the rich store of his learning. have often been described by stu- dents as the finest of their years at Harvard."

We last met Dr. Ferguson on our way home from England in June 1951. He still recalled some of Dr. Alexander Anderson's trite sayings in the Old Prince of Wales College. He like his former teacher believ-

The President, Mrs. Elmer Ste- wart, presided and the meeting opened with call to worship, the Theme was "Evangelism The Church's Business." Hymn, 258 "God of Mercy. God of Grace" was sung. Passages of Scripture were read by Mrs. Clarke Harding. Mrs. Har- land Daye. Mrs. Lindsay Sharpe and Miss Harriet Glover, follow- ed by prayer for the group's Mis- sionary in. prayer, Miss Mary Mac- Dougall, and Lord's prayer in uni- son.

Businesslperiod opened with onl- lection which amounted to &6.45. Minutes of previous meeting were read and approved. Roll call was answered by ll members; 12 mem- bership fees were paid. -The members of Springfield Wo- men's Instltute met for their Jan- uary meeting at the home of Mrs. George Dunning with nthe president presiding. The opening song "This Is The Way We Brush Our Teeth" introduced the theme "Health and Social WelfIre." The repeating of the Creed was followed by roll call to which 10 membe D and two

visitors responded with I Good Health Rule. Seven premium wool blankets

were on' display and five purchased by members present. The History Committee reported that almost 100 copies had been sold and it was agreed that I complimentary copy be sent to the office of the Provincial Women's Institute.

On suggestion of the School Com- mlttee. Mrs. Crawford Sinclair. it was decided that cocoa and sugar be purchased for the school chil- dren's" bot lunch. It was decided that all bills be paid. Mrs. Keith Mayne Ind Mrs. George Dunning were appointed to make arrange- ments for I Valentine Social to be held in the hall.

One pair sockees were passed in to the Red Cross Committee who suggested that more Red Cross work be got from the head office. -The meeting of the Tlgnish Home and School Association was held in the assembly room of our Lady of'the Angels -Convent. Tlg- nish on Thursday evening January 20th with I large group of par- ents and the teachers to attend- ance. The meeting was pr ” ' over by Mrs. J. A. Macdonald, president. The minutes of the pre- vious meetlng were read by Rev. Sister St. Peter Marie and were adopted. There was no correspond- ence. The treasurer, Mr. Emile Gallant read the financial state- ment which showed a substantial balance of money on hand. The President gave a report of the Provincial Home and School semi- annual meeting she had attended the latter part of November.

The Association are planning to provide a suitable cupboad for one of the class rooms in Dalton School and money was voted for this purpose.

The president, Mrs. MacDonald. then called upon Mr. Hector Buote. B.A., to give his views on suitable entertainment for our teen-ager Mr. Buote's ideas were very g and he had spent considerable time in interviewing different persons In the village in regards to the matter and he received splendid co-operation. The Tlgnish Legion Home will be available (he in- formed the meeting) on I couple of evenings each week for the High School pupils to play badminton. Miss Priscilla Gavin and Miss Ann Gaudette volunteered to instruct the children. If a suitable teacher can be procured. the school chil- dren may also enjoy the game of basketball.

Mr. Buote also suggested "hik- ing". He said. Saturday would be an ideal day. and if the pupils with proper supervision were to hike to one of the rural schools. meet the pupils from that district. and over their lunches. (which they would carry) they could have is friendly cliat. along any line such as studics. sports or any subject suit- able to the place or time. "Old time square-dancing" if properly done was. he considered one of the most enjoyable forms of enter- tainment for our young people, and he suggested having I committee appointed to take care of this; I committee of four was then ap- pointed and were Mrs. J. One of the I developments of clawsis found on the feet of lemmings, a short-tailed rodent which makes its home near the north'pole. In the good old sum- mer llme the front feet have long, sharp claws fastened to the two middle ,toes. These claws enable the lemming to dig underground tunnels. But when the ground freezes. the lemming can't dig, so he spends the winter months slushing about in the snow. The two long claws I have just de- scribed to you, grow twice their normal size.
