The partyétirst visited Winter River, and ex- amiued the stream at the point indicated by Mr. Murdoch in his report. This point is about three hnadred yards west of the Union Road, on the property owned by Mr. Charles Bryenton. ‘There ean be no doubt of. the abundance of the supply and of the purity of this water. It is perhaps the most suitable stream 10 the Island for a water supply. Dotted here and there along the banks are springs of pure cold water, not thirty feet distant from the main stream It has now capacity to supply a town of over

Some time was speat here examining the stream for a short distance up and down, and then the party proceeded to Curtis's Dam.ou the Winsloe Road. This

is a fine siagie stream, and now shows a)

large volume of water. But the water guage and the testimony of the inhabi- tavts show that in dry seasons the water becomes greatly diuvished. There are good natural facilities Lere for damming ; and were the wuter supply permauent, the quality is all that could be desired.

Its present capacity would probably fill a

sixteen inch pipe.

** Gates’ stream” and its sources were next visited. This stream pow shows plenty of water runniog rapidly over a solid clean bed, not s° full stream, but iv the opivion of the engineer amply sufficient for our town. But its supply is not permanent, and during last fall's drought it was nearly dry.

Seme time was spent in carefully exa- Mining all these streams, following them to their sources and examining the largest spring heads. The party town in the afternoon.

The Winter River -upply is certainly the best. We know from actual analysis

that it is the purest water in or near the |

city. Its supply is abundant; and if Mr. Murdoch’s report is to be believed, it is the least costly. Troe the Curtis and Gates streams, if connected as suggested

by Mr. Murdoch, will give a full stipply, |

but this will evidently be more costly.

We do not know what offer Mr. Gamble will make the City. or on what terms he will bring this water into our town, but we hope that an arrangement may be made, by which, without over- burdening taxpayers. the great advantage of an abundent supply of pure water may be secured,

AGAIN the Grit pewspapers are wrong. They have been stating confidently that Mr. Holmes was to be the Government candidate in the Picton election contest. It does not appear that they ever had avy authority whatever for the statement ; and being a Conservative, it was not likely that Mr. Holme: was going to de- sert kis post and duty at the head of the Local Government, even for the sake of representing such a fiue County as Pic- tou in the House of Commons. We never supposed that Mr. Holmes would be the candidate; and it turns ont now that ata convention of three hundred leading Conservatives, drawn from all parts of the County, John MeDougald, Esq., of Westville, was enthusiastically and unanimously nominated.

Mr. McDougall is a young man, uever before * candidate; and the feeling of confidence in their strength pervading the Governmeat rank« is evidenced by the fact that he lias been selected to cope with one of the ripest and strougest Grits in Nova Scotia—the :nan who headed the poll in 1874—Mr. Carmichael. Suc- cess to Mr. McDougall, for in hia success and the triumph of the Government lies the hope of the miners of Pictou.
