The coldest temperatures for many years. possibly as low as any previously recorded, were ex- perienced in Western Prince County Tuesday night. Many AI- herton residents reported temper- atures of 26 below zero at lilin- night. At the home of several per- sons living in volleys, Fred liar- dy's at Woodvale, Bert Rlx's St. Lawrence and at Huntley a record 30 below was reported.

All those interested in the wel- fare of education on Prince Ed- ward Island should greet with re- newed hope the news that St. Dunstan's University is beginning a course In teacher training. The new step should increase the sup- ply of qualified teachers on Prince Edward Island to some extent.

In the last analysis. of course, the rewards, monetary and other- wise, of a profesion is its strongest lure. but the fact that S.D.U. stu- dents will be able to take normal training in conjunction with their university courses should increase the number of teachers who use the teaching pi fesslon as a step- ping stone to other vocations. Con- sidering the desperate straits in which the teaching profession finds itself at present here. surely no one will be too much perturbed at the idea of increasing the number of ”stc-pping stone" teachers.

Men high in government circles of the past ten years or so have given it as their opinion that the profession of teaching was only a "stepping stone" to more remun- erative professions anyway. These new teachers will be properly qual- ified at any rate. and therefore superior to many of those re- cruited into the profession through our "desperation policy" of the past few years.

You can always keep the schools open in a province if you are wil- ling to reach low enough for avail- able ”taIent". In the twilight days of the Canadian scene the desper- ate need for teachers was met by recruiting old soldiers and others who could "read and write a lit- tie.' In this day and age we should

The case of a man from Borden charged with hit and run driving was dismissed in Magistrate's Court at Summerside yesterday by Magistrate R.S. Hinton. Q.C.. at the oncluslon of the trial in which three crown witnesses gave evi- dence. No witnesses were called by the defence.

The charge resulted from an ac- cident at Summerside East on the evening of October llth. 1956, in which a half-ton truck driven by Mrs. Maude Mac!-Ewen. who was driving in an easterly direction, was side swiped by a car going west that failed to stop. However. the trial evidence revealed that the driver of the car which failed to stop was not identified.

Mr. Neil Mar-Leod acted for the. Crown and Mr. Harold Goodwin was attorney for the accused.
