Ships Sail On Cruise Monday

HALIFAX. Aug. 10-(CP)-The frlgates La Hulloise and Swansea and the destroyer Crescent will sail from Halifax Monday on their third and last summer cruise to the United Kingdom. The ships will again carry cadets of the University Naval Training Divis- ions. who will receive practical sea training. Nearly 150 cadets are expected to make the cruise.

The Swansea will visit her namesake -- Swansea. Wales - for an informal two-day visit, while the La Hullolse and Crescent are visiting Plymouth.

After leaving Halifax. the three ships will make Portsmouth their first port of call, remaining there one week before sailing to Swan- sea and Plymouth.

The ships will leave the United Kingdom Sepl.'5. with Swansea and La Hulloise scheduled to vis- it St. John's. Nfld., before return- ing to Halifax Sept. 10. .

The high scale of business activ- ity in Charlottetown is indicated by the 314,424,000 in sales chalked up in the local stores. This figure. an increase from the sl4.0'l'l,00O retail business of the previous year. was well over the city's quota. It represents .1666 per cent of the Dominion's business--more than the .1187 per cent that should be produced locally on the basis of

A guide to the relative economic position of each community is given in the survey by a "quality of market" index. This compares the individual city's potential. based on population. income, sales and other factors, to that of the rest of the country. Charlotte- town's index is placed at 103. or 3 per cent above the general average.

The survey shows that Canada recorded important economic gains in the past year. Retail sales were six per cent higher in 1950 than in 1040, bringing the total for the ion Provinces to over s9 billion. As in the case of the United Slsles.how- ever. farm income lagged behind the rest of the economy despite substantial gains in wheat and grain production. The year ended with a net farm income of 81.4 billion, about six per cent below the 1049 level. In industrial out- put a six per cent gain was made and. in hourly wages in manufact- uring, a five per cent gain.
