No Trace Has Yet Been Discovered of the Missing Money.
Wiywyivec, Man., Oct 11.—Mr Durnford, of Montreal, chief inspector of the Molsons Bank, is making » searching investigation into the robbery here. It appears that of the stolen money orly about twenty two thousand dollars can be negotiated with safety. Fifteen thousaad dollars is in notes of lerge denominations that are seldom circulated in genera) business tran*actions, such as $500 and $1,000 bille. The smaller d«nominations are five’s and ten’s of the Dominion Government _ issue. Twenty five thousacd dollars of the money is in legals, which are only used in making settlements between banks, and are of vo use forother purposes. It is learned that the box which contained the stolea money was taken by the thieves, who evidently had no desire to waste time in transferring the booty to some other receptacle,

Paris, Oct. 12 —Yesterday was the day fixed for the sale of the house and furniture of M. Emil Zola,the famous French nove'* ist, to pay a judgment of 30,000 francs obtained against him by three handwriting experts, recently won a libel suit, g out of the Dreyfus case, against the novelist,
The proposed sale resulted in a sen-~ sation.
Friends of M. Zola ran the bidding up on the first article—a walout table—to 32,000 francs, thus producing the amount required and stopping the sale.

Sir Edward Clarke’s Opinion About
an Alliance League.
Lonpon, Oct. 9. —Sir Edward Clarke, the former Solicitor-Geveral, in a letter whieb he has written declining an invitation to support the Piymouth branch of the Anglo-American League says :—
“With all respect to the distirguished members of the genaral committee, | think that euch an organization is unnecessary and not volikely to be misc! i vous. The iu sy activity of a society representing one barticular view of foreign aflairs is very s+!dom of public benefit I have ulways laboured to promote the most triendly re~ lations between Great Britain and the United States, but we can ali do much to secure peace between the two countries and friendly rivalry by promoting the civilization of the world, without binding ourselves to @ society for whose action we should be responsible, although we could not cdutrol it.
“Great Britain and the Uniied States have no doubt many ties of sympathy, but they are two nations and not one. They must often have divergent interests, and I prefer to be unshackled by membership in a society which binds itself to constant cox operation with the United States Govern- ment. Measures Now Being Adopted to Eradicate the Pest.
Bervix, Oct. 11.—In many parts of Germany the authorities are warning the people against sparrows. A decree has been issued at Emden, Hanover, requiring landowners each vear between Octover lst aod December let to deliver to the local officials a certain number of e#parrows or sparrows’ heads. The owner of 25 hectares of land must produce 12 spserrows for sparrows’ beads or pay a fine of six marks.

I deny that these sections (or indeed any other section in the act)coofers anyright oa any Commissioner to resign.
The 22nd sec, printed by you, by express enactment, legislates the three preseut ccinmiseioners ini office until February, 1901, Being so elected or legislated com~ missioners, they cannot by their own act relieve themselves from the duties imposed on them, and it will require express authority to enable them to resign. No such authority is given in the act.
You may answer that the 28th and 29ch sections, also printed by yuu, do con- ferthe right to resign. If se will you state the procedure to be followed by the commissioner desiring to resign? How is he going to do so? Will be stick his resignation on the town pump, or to whom wil] he deliverit? Perhaps you will aleo slip out of theee questions by referring the “conundrum” as you are pleaeed to desig- vate the question in any last letter, “to the gentlemen who drew the act and had it passed.”
