many of whom expressed their satisfaction at the able style in which it is set forth.
Councr.ton Harrts, with a few remarks, moved that the report of the City of Char- lottetown be published.
S\ amendment, that the publication of the report be deferred till next meeting, was moved, but the original was carried on a di- yision of 7 to J.
A number of City accounts were read and ordered to be paid. These consist of in- terest on debentures, labor on Park, streets. etc., and some small incidental expenses./
The minutes of the last meeting of the Fire Department Was read and the payment of anumber of sinall accounts thereto an- nexed was ordered.
A report read from the Fire Department recommended to the Council the petition of the Captains of the various Fire Companies, prayed for an increase in the amounts usually granted for their services.
Qn motion of Councillor Quirk, the peti- tion was laid on the table until next meet- ing.
Tus Mayor informed the Council that he was waited on bya lumber-dealer named Jarnes, of the firm of Smith & Barnes, who offered to supply the City with 100,000 feet of deal, at $17 per M. He also received offers for the same ‘supply, ranging from $17.50 to $22, from other dealers, and, as Mr. Barnes’ olfer was the best, and as he was going to leave the City to-morrow, he recommended that the offer be considered by the Council immediately.
" Afier some remarks from the Councillors, it was moved that the Mayor be enpowered to purcliase 100,000 feet of planks from the above-named tirm at $17 per M.
GounctiLtorn Morris being of opinion that half the amount was a sufficient supply for next suramer’s work, moved an amend- ment that 50,000 feet be purchased.
The amendment being put was lost on a vote of 7 to 3. The original motion was then put and carried.
Councrttor Hearrz, Chairman of the Tender Committee, reported that the Com- mittee had under their consideration the tender for printing the copied By-Law, and recommended that the tender of Coombs & Worth—$3.00 per form—be accepted.
The tenders received were then read, and Councillor Smith moved that the tender ot E. Webber, who tendered on behalf ef Mrs. Cooper, be accepted. The motion was then put and carried.
VUouncittok Morris then drew attention to the several cases of fever that at present existed*in the vicinity of the Railway Sta- tion: He said there were several com- plaints, and a gentleman named Mr. Wright asked the Council for a hearing in regard to the matter.
Mr. Wright said that at present there ex- isted in the block fronting on Water street a cesspool, which, within the last three months, cost the city six valuable lives. There were at present sixteen persons In that vicinity confined to their bed by fever, and if this cesspool remained unclosed there was no knowing where the destruction o! life would end. It could be filled up with sari at small cost, and he entreated the Counsel to do so immediately. é
His Worsuir said that a short time ago he submitted to the Council a letter which he received from Dr. McLeod, regarding the matter, but there was no action taken.
Tae Recorver said the letter of Dr. Mc- Leod was brought to his notice. He sent a policemen to report upon the matter. There was, at the time, no nusiance apparent ; therefore he could take no action in the matter.
Tue Mayor said there were several com- plaints made about the wells in that vicin- ity, and that he had sent a Jar of water from one of them to be analyzed by Dr. Leeming. , .

The Times’ Paris dispatch says: By a lisruption of the Orleanist group the Gov- ernment gained about twenty supporters for Daufaure’s policy, including a state of Siege Amnesty and Colportage Bills. About elaven Orleanists will probably join the Legitimatists.
A Rome correspondent of the Manchester Guardian says that public opinion is irritat- ed at the irreconciliable attitude which ap- pears to have been adopted at the Vatican.

Their lips are sealed by the man who dismissed them. They cannot speak till Thursday. ‘They are gagged as well as dismissed.
Pelletier has gone to Quebec with further imstructions, no doubt from Ottawa.
Every hour adds to the number of those who condemn this shocking outrage on con- stitutional government.

Feeling that the enterprise is not in good hands, I am
repared to take immediate charge of the ‘‘Northern Light” till the first of May, ask- ing nothing for my services should [ not succeed in performing the services equall as well as last winter. Should you thin proper to accept the above offer, [ would re- quire to take the first mate and first engi- neer from here.

Tue first appearance under the ‘New License Law” was ‘‘put in” this morning at the Stipendiary Magistrale’s Court, by Mr. C. O. Winkier, charged with keeping his bar open after nine o'clock at night. Charlie said ‘‘he didn’t!’ and the case was post- poned for a fortnight.
At the Stipendiary Magisirate’s Court, this morning, Donald McQuarrie, drunk and incapable, was fined $2, or 8 days ; James Goodman, for loafing on the side- walks, was fined $1.60, or 10 days; C. O. Winkler, for keeping his bar open after 9 o’clock—-case stands over until this day fortnight.
Important! !|—Wedo not question the reliabillty of the source from which the Patriot made inquiries as to what Court the question arose as to the powers of a Justice of the peace for the whole colony, but that the enquiry was “ dilligent” or intelligent, we are possessed of grave doubts ; and in order to enable the Patriot to lay before its read- ers, news later than it has yet been able to procure, we hasten to answer the query, and inform him that the question (as given by us on the 4tlf inst.) was raised in the Su- preme Court, now sitting at Georgetown. li is a curious fact that, although the ‘‘seer” can plainly distinguish matters beyond Georgetown, his vision is at fault in this in- stance.
Tue Patriot asserts that ‘‘the Mayor considers that there are only three printing ‘offices in the City capable of printing the City Accounts,” viz., Coombs & Worth, Bremner Bros., and the Examiner Publish- ing Co. We are not sufficiently in ‘‘ His Worship’s” confidence to know whether he holds any such views or not, but consider it more than likely that he does, as he is known to be a ‘‘cool-headed” business 1nan, and in holding such views he would be but endorsing the opinion of nearly every busi- ness man among his constituents. Since the addition of the ‘‘seer” to its staff, the Patriot has been hazarding guesses with a wild recklessness that smacks of impotent wrath. We should like to know the result of last nigh’ts ‘‘guessing” as to whom the contract for printing the ‘‘City Report” was awarded. Come! Mr. Patriot, be honest for once, and tell us who do you think got the job?
