HALIFAX (CUP):The Dalhousie
University Student Council January 28, overruled the staff of the student News— paper , the Dalhousie Gaz— ette, and appointed one of their own council members, Ken McDougall, as editor . of the paper for a one year term.
The action was a viol- ation of the Canadian Uni- versity Press (CUP) state- ment of principles. The G- azette was a founding mem— ber of the 35 year old st— udent press organization.
The staff had elected Marg Bezanson, who worked on the paper for two years, as Editor before the Coun- cil meeting. However, un— der the Student Union Con- stitution, this election had to be ratified by the council. ,
Both applicants were screened by the council ap- plications Committee and it recommended Bezanson for Gazette Editor.

call for a student meeting to discuss the issue. This has also been done in an editorial on the student radio station which broad- casts in the Student Union Building and to campus residences.

The_staff was also prepared to put out an alternate newspaper should the council stand by their decision not to have Bez- tanson Gazette Editor.

staff democracy and collec—\
tive decision — making. McDougall intended to enfo— rce his power as editor
and carry on a form of autocracy. However, he did concede that the supreme authority would be the
Student Union.
The council Overlooked the relative experience of both applicants and the fact the present staff would strike if McDougall
was chosen editor. It vot- ed ovarwhelmingly in fav— our of McDougall. Following the passage of the motion appointing McDougall Editor, the Gazette staff, a majority of which attended the meeting, left. The motion was t n made to make McDougall editor effective
immediately. It was defeat-r
ed. The motion was inten- ded to prevent the present staff from publishing this week's issue of the Gazette possibly the last one.
Mchugall takes over the editorship Wednesday

A motion was also made and carried that the last issue put out by the present staff be screened and censored by a repre— sentative of the Student Council. This was carried out by the President , Brian Smith, and the Chairman, Naderajah.

Bezanson fulfilled the qualificationS‘ for editor as outlined in the CUP con- stitution. MtDougall, on the other hand, has very 1 little experience with the paper. He worked for it fm a few months last year, was unable to work with/the staff, quit and ran for a position on 'the Student Council. -

Over one hundred cur- ious people crowded into the Panther/Lounge last n Friday after the hockey ga- me to listen to three very promising entertainers.Not knowing exactly what to ex- pect, the audience just sat back and waited. What they received was'an hour and a half of entertainment,folk and folk—rock music. Bill Gardiner started the even— ing with an unknown number called golden vanity then broke into a change of pace with two French folksongs which were well received by the audience.
The audience seemed to enjoy the performance more assthe evening progr— essed and wanted more when the final song was played. Everyone left knowing they had a very enjoyable and ~relaxed evening of entertr ainment.
Anybody who is a folk fan or who wishes a quiet alternative to the other disco-clubs in town should take in the next Coffee- House at the Panther Lounge \Although there will be no Coffee House until next Fr‘ iday, you will have an opp’ ortunity to see Bill, Paul, and Marilyn perform this Friday evening Feb 2nd, in the Lounge of Marian Hall.
