The Season's Roll
The chilly blasts of Wednesday and Thursday were a reminder that our productive season is drawing to a close and that the harvesting of crops must be com- pleted within the next month.
Autumn is a pleasant season in which nature puts on a final show and color to give man- kind courage for the short days and severity of winter.
October brings to the farmer a mu-'” ' of tasks. some to final- ize the work of one season. others in preparation for the next.
' Provincial Plowing Mme
Although on the opening day, the hand of the weatherman fell heavily on the Provincial Plowing Match at Dundee, yet it's manage- ment had good reason to be proud of their show and elated at the support it received.

In recent years and particularly among veterans, western Canada has seen the development. of a number of Go-operative Farms. such a. farm is usually a large one in which a number of individual farmers pool their resources for the purchase of land. equipment and livestock.
A set-up of this kind allows for specialisation on the part of the members. One perhaps being re- sponsibie for the hogs. another for the poultry, the cattle. the field work. the care and operation of machinery and with the direction of business management. 5 Where the natunil individual- istic i dencies of farmers can be overcome. we can see much to re- lcommend. from an efficiency standpoint, such a farm. It is prob- table that the individual who can specialize in a particular branch may become an expert when not. required to divide, his attention with the numerous operations of the average farm.
In the absence of exact inform- 'ation we are not prepared to re- commend such a system. but. would certainly be interested in seeing such a unit. operated on an experimental basis in this prov- nce. .

There is still time. but it should be done immediately, for young men. sixteen years of age orover. to make application to this office for scholarships donated by the Maritime co-operative services Limited for students wishing to attend the Farm Course starting on October 24th at the Nova Scotla Agricultural College.

The finger of destiny oints to-
day to the North American Con- tinent. Upon it's power grid strength depends the future of e world. If that strength is dissipat- ed -in it necessarily futile attempt to feed the teeming millions of Asia, then North America will fail as a great world stabilizing force. "Finding the food for a hungry world" is a fine phrase but it's im- plications are far reaching and fraught with many dangers.
Freight lute zones
The recent decision of the Board of Transport Commissioners to establish Prince Edward Island as a uniform freight zone will meet with general approval, and that of potato shippers in particular.
The possibility exists. although it may never arise, that as a. re- sult of setting up one freight zone that the railway might be tempted to favor the placing of cars at Stations closer to Borden. If the same revenue is derived from a. car loaded at Emerald as from one loaded at Souria, and with three or four days quicker turnover in- volved. we feel the temptation does exist. However, it may be bet. ier not to cross any bridges until we come to them.
Farm Forum season Begins
Farm Forum members who have been following the Summer Fallow program will be interested in the broadcast of October 22nd which will be a dramatized introduction to the Farm Forum season. Officers of past years groups can get away to a good start by en- couraging their Forums to meet. on October 22nd. listen to the Broadcast and organize for the first meeting on October 29th.

Ne Beef Embargo
The recent National meeting of the Canadian Association of Con- sumers defeated a motion that an embargo should be placed on Can- adian beef going into the United 8iates.on the grounds that our earnings of American dollars would be reduced. It is no doubt gratify- ing to the Canadian farmer that the motion was defeated though we feel that a much better reason could have been found , reasons could have been found, seasons that would take into considerat- ion a fair deal both for the Can- adian producer and the American consumer. '
If the livestock producer were forced to cope on the one hand with a surplus of hogs and on the other with a loss of beef eirportwe would have the type of marketing muddle which has in the past pro- vided the Canadian consumer with many farm products at figures be- low the cost of production. The era of bargain sale food prices is past and in the best interest of our economy should never return.
Who will Feed The Pigs?
The Eastern hog industry has in the past. ten years been built up on the feeding of western coarse grains. This program was a double-barrelled one in as much as the eastern farmer was enabled to utilize his time and labor in the production of a valuable addition to his general farm economy and the western farmer was afforded an outlet for large quantities of
grain. The fact should not be lost. sight of that heavy production
with marketing and transportation problems will quite likely induce the western farmer to expand hog .productlon.
It is quite apparent that western grain fed to a western hog will produce pork more economically then the same grain fed in the east. V Large orders for feeder pigs for Saskatchewan are coming to this province and it appears that a partial reversal of trends is taking place with the eastern hog travel- ling to the west to breakfast on prairie cereals.
