MRS. JOSEPH MALONE

it was with deep'shock and regret that the many friends of Mary Malone, beloved wife of Joseph Malone, learned of her passing in .he Charlottetown Hos- pital onArpril 30th, at the early age of 54 years.

Though not in good health for some time, the seriousness of her condition was not realized. until she ‘was admitted to hospital on March 31st. She underwent sur- gery on April 5th, and for a tme seemed to be making progress, but then, in spite of ekcellent medical attention. and constant, loving care, she slipped quiet‘y away on April

Mary was born in Charlotte- town, the elder daughter of the late Mr. and-Mrs. Fred Powers, and received her education at Notre Dame Academy, although seriously crippled by polio at the age of four- On April 22, 1925, she married Joseph» Malone, and the couple resided in Charlotte- town during their marriage. Al- though her disability restricted her outside activities, her home was always open to friends and ne' hbours and anyone in, need, an her kindness and generosity well known to everyone with whom she came in contact.

'Left behind to mourn their, deep loss are her husband, Joseph, a daughter, Helen, Mrs. Russell Stanley of Brandon, Mani- toba, and ason, Ted, of Halifax, N 8., all. of whom were constantly at her bedside during her illness in hospital. Also three grand- children Teddy, Elaine ‘and Gerry Stanley, and a sister, Helen, Mrs. Edward L. Trainor, South Boston, Mass.

The remains rested at the Hen. where many friends called to pay their last respects. The funeral, which 'was largely attended, was held to [the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer, where Requiem High Mass was celebrated by Very Rev. Moreau,’ C. 8s R. Interment took place in the Catholic Cem- etery, with Rev. C. Coghlin, C.‘ SsR. conducting the service at the grave. Pallbearers were J. Davey, .C‘. Corrigan, W. Cullen, P. Clarkin, W. A. Davey, R. Air Clashes Over Strait Of Formosa

TAIPEI, Formosa (AP)-— Na- tionalist jet planes clashed with speedy MiG-175 in two air skinn- ishes with Chinese Reds Thurs— day over the Formosa Strait. ' In one'fi-ght the Nationalists shot down two jets, possibly three, the defence ministry reported.

At sea, nationalist gunboats sank one of seven Communist boats apparently seeking to res- cue a downed Red pilot.

Radio Penning, meanwhile, said two Nationalist 'llhunderjets were shot down and another damaged by Red Chinese planes near the coast of Fukien prom e on the Olnnese mainland. '

Nationalist Defence Minister Yu Ta-Iwei said China has massed forces along a 750- mlle stretch of coast and is ready to probe any weak point in the Formosa defences.

Reports Fire Main Cause Of Eskimo Deaths

OTTAWA (CW—Northern Af- fairs Minister Hamilton said Thursday night a fire which de- stroyed a food cache 10 miles from Garry Lake was the main contributing factor to the deaths by stamation of 16 Eskimos last February and March.

“I don’t believe the tragedy can be blamed on anyone,” he said in the Commons after read- ing a lengthy report by a north- ern service officer on the circum- stances surrounding the deaths.

Earlier reports said 14 Es- kimos died of starvation and ex- posure, but Mr. Hamilton said 16 died, directly or indirectly as a result of the fire which destroyed the food cache.

Earlier, too, he said, no one in

flood was in the cache.

But at the night sitting of the Commons, Mr. Hamilton said that Spartan Airways of Ottawa, which had done some work in the area west of Hudson Bay, had donated 2,400 pounds of food to the Garry Lake Eskimos. to be kept at the cache.

Additional food supplies, were flown in in December and April by the RCMP, Mr. Hamilton said, adding that the cache was two~thirds full, providing for a safety margin, when it burned down.

The fire was due to the explo- sion of an oil burner, the report
