Wilmer McLean's Two Historic Touses,

General Horace Perter describes the surrender cf Lee in his ‘*Campuaigning With Grant’’ in The Century. The sur- render took place in the honse of Wil- mer McLean, it will be remembered. General Porter says: It is a singular historical coincidence that McLean's former hcme was upon a Virginia farm near the battleground cf the first Bull Run, and his house was used for a time as the headquarters of General Beaure- gard. When it was found that this fight was so popular that it was giveu an ch- core and a second battle of Bull Run was fought the next year on the samo ground, Mr. McLean became convinced that the place was altogether lacking in repose, and, to avoid the active theater of war, he removed to the quiet village of Appomattox, cnly to find himself again surrounded by contending armies. Thus the first and last scenes of the war frama in Virginia were enacted upon bis property.

The Spanish Main.

The Spanish main is the circular bank of islands forming the northerp and eastern boundaries of the Caribbean sea, beginning at Mosquito and inclad- ing Jamaica, Santo Domingo, the Lee- ward islands and the Windward islands, with the coast of Venezuela, in South America. Nervous Children.

kindergarten. Do not forget they need companionship. Give them a good, comfortable bed,

where the air is pure, and do all you can to promote healthful sleep. A little easily digested food before bedtime often helps them to sleep more soundly than they oth- erwise would.
