At a meeting of the members of the Law Society held to-day, a committee consisting of Hon. John Longworth, L. H. Davies, Esq., and the Secretary, was appointed to prepare a resolution expressing the sympathy of the Society for the family of the late Sir Robert Hodgson, in their bereavement The mem- bers of the Bar meet to-merrow at 1 o'clock, at the Law Library, for the purpose of at- tending the funeral of the deceased.

We must, howerver, admit that it would be un- fortunate if common people, unused in the way to take legal procoedings, should become impressed with the idea that by non-attend- ance te a mere technicality, they may be de- nied substantial justice by our Stipendiary Magistrate, when a leading Queen’s Counsel is concerned. To our mind,

During the year offers of new business were mac to the extent of $4,514,023 on 2,440 lives. 2,107 policies, were issued amounting to $3,965,052 53—the largest busi- ness ever transacted by the Company in one year. TheC mpany now carries insurance n 10 540 lives, amounting to $21,547,754,38, and the assets ut the end of the last year, stood at $4,297,352,65, against total liabilities, actual and possible, of $3,552,956,18. The income from interest, for the year amounted to $243,- 357,09, wile the death claims with their pre- fis amounted to $192 948. The total revenve @ the year was $835,856,39. The Guardian states that the flax spin- ners will reduce work to four days in a week after the 4th of October, owing toa depression in the Irish linen trade. It also says that the upward movement in raw cotton there threatened a strike of the weavers, and a prospect of short time in Oldham district have unsettled the market to such an exteyit as to seriously interfere with the transaction of business. The Cal- cutta market for Manchester goods is steady, and there is a rather better inquiry but not at paying prices. The Mgyptian and Levan- ting markets are hopeful, but there is not much increase in business. In the home trade there is no improvement, but the distribution of goods 1s rather more active than two or three weeks ago.
