Anout eighty plasterer’s laborers went on strike in Toronto on Saturday morning for increase from $1.70 to $1.89 per day. Non- union bosses granted the increase. Others positively refused. Over one hundred plaster- ers thrown out of work through the strike, and work on a large number of buildings has been suspended.

Ir is stated that the steamships at Phila- delphia are taking grain to Europe at the same rate as from Montreal, and the rate from Chicago to Philadelphia is the same as to Montreal—thirteen cents. Tk trial of the prisoners in the Harbor Grace affray is progressing slowly, seven witnesses only have been examined in three days, and their evidence as to the identifica- tion of the prisoners is so condradictory that it does not stand the test of cross-examination or agree with the former testimony. An important crown witness swore that both bodies rushed together simultaneously, when Jeans, the first man, fell and both bodies were in a tangle.

It appears that the Deputy Sheriff had an ex- ecution out of the Supreme Court against one James Leonard, of South Shore; aad he went over for the purpose of executing the execution. In thas performing his duty, Mr. Curtis was assaulted by Leonard with a pitchfork and prevented from executing the writ. An infor- mation was laid before Messrs. Heard and Tomlins, two Queen's Country Magistrates and tney, having heard the eviden eS, COM- mitied Leonard to jail to stand his trial at the Supreme Court. Bombardment of Suakin.

Cairo, May 19.

Two hundred rebels bombarded Suakin to-day, the attack lasting one hour. Two of the inhabitants were wounded. The rebels succeeded in stealing 1000 sheep, and then retired. The rebels have captured the government magazine at Aba Hamed ana virtually possess the town. The rebels are advancing upon Koresko and general alarm has been created. El Mahdi’s emissaries continue to advance and are welcomed every where.

Pere Hyacinthe, on arriving at Madison, Wis., found a message from the French government awaiting him, which contained such pleasant news that he will cut short his visit to America by a month. He was not at liberty to state the exact nature of the French government, but would state that it was of the utmost importance to his church work in France ; that it would here- after be recognized by the government, and would hereafter net want financial and other means of perfect success.

It is curious to observe certain national characteristics. The Englishman always has a poor boot and a fine hat; the Ameri- can, a splendid boot and a shocking bad hat. Difference of character may also be traced in the differences of pipes, as, for instance, the German long pipe and the French and Irish short pipe.

Mere Trouble Expected. Wiynipec, May 19.

Trouble is expected from the Indians in the Northwest. Chief Piapot insists that his band must have a reservation where they can get fresh fish and clams, and that this is necessary to counteract the effeets of the baeon, which has spread scurvey among his people and caused the death of fifty. He complains of bad trestment at the hands of the Government. Yellow Calfs band are reported to be well armed, and defying the authority.

Another Bank Failure. New York, May 18. The Erie County Savings Bank, of this citv, suspended this’morning. Its capital is $159.000, and its habilities $300,000. [t is said that the President has been dab- blingin oil, He has left the city.
