FUNERAL YESTERDAY -- The funeral of the late Mrs. Angus MacPhee of New Haven was held yesterday afternoon with a short service at her late residence, fol- lowed by service in Churchill Church. Interment was in Churchill cemetery. The funeral was very largely attendcai.

ZION Y. P. 8.- Zion Young People's Socltty held its annual Valentine social last evening. The event started off with a hearty sing song, led by Keith. Beatcn with Mr. Frank Johnson at the piano. The committee in charge of the concert. which the Society plans to present in March, gave its re- port. Several lively games were led by Keith Beaton, Elaine Hum- phrey and Roddie Hickox. The singing of "Blest Be The Tie That Binds" brought the evening to I :2 use.

YOUNG PEOPLE'S MEETING - The regular weekly meeting of the Young People's society of Central Christian Church took place last night as usual. The meeting got underway with the singing of some lively choruses. The president pre- sided over the business portion of the meeting. Although it was a stormy night there was quite a large attendance. Mr. Dunbar. be- cause of a slight illness. could not be present and hope was expires- sed for his early recovery. Myron Weeks led the study period, after which the meeting was dismissed by June Moore.

LUCKY WINNERS - At a card party held recently at North Gran- ville the ladles' prize for progres- sive auction was won by Mrs. Janis Taperrgents' prize by Mr. Murdock Buchanan. and consola- tion prizes by Mrs. Fred Taylor and Mr. George Dunning. An ap- ple contest was won by Johnny Ward. and paper race by George Dunning. The first drawing on blankets was won by William An- drew, Mayfleld, and the second by Bordon Follnnd, Granville. TRINITY Y. P. U. - Trinity Young People's Union held the regular weekly meeting last even- ing in the Social Hall with the Faith and Evangelism Commission in charge of the program. The meeting opened with a lively re- creation period, led by Ewen Stewart. This was followed by the business meeting with Mary Mor- rison. vloe-president, in the chair. The reports by the committee for the forthcoming three-act play were heard. The highlight of the awning was an inspiring speech by Rev. George Fisher on the topic "Love". The worship service was led by Joan Beairsto with Mary Morrison as pianist. A solo, "In the Garden” was rendered by Shirley Bell. The meeting closed with Benediction pronounced by Mr. Irwin.

SCOUT HOCKEY

Well Scouts and Cubs. due to the poor weather conditions we've had very little hockey for Scouts. and Cubs of Charlottetown and vicinity. Let's hope this situation will improve eoon. of the hockey played thus far between the various scout groups, we can proudly say that no finer spirit of sportsmanship and friend- ship among the players exists in any other group or hockey club. This spirit was quite noticeable to the many spectators who wit- nessed the fast and exciting game played recently between East Roy- alty and Wlneloe Troops.

Although the Wlnsloe lads tried time and time again to tie up the score, the East Royalty Scouts, only seven in number, proved to be the superior team in the end, the nnal score being 4-2 for the Royalty tea.m. Outstanding net- tcndlng was evidenced on both sides throughout the entire game by the goalies Wayne Weeks of wlnsioe and Bubby Doucette oi the Royalty- CUB HOCKEY

Thus far the Charlottetown Cub Hockey League, comprising teams from the Holy Redeemer, Baptist, Basilica, St. James and East Roy- alty Packs, has got off to a poor start with only two games beinz

Canadian Press correspondent SYDNEY, Australia, (OP) - A French expedition to the Antarc- tic is now in Australia on its way home with its two main objecm uxomplished. These were a study of the rare guin. found only in and a survey of the complete coastline of Adelie Land, the French sector of the Antarctic. With them the expedition brought lo emperor penguins. Three died early on the voyage but the scientists hope that the oth- ers will survive the long voyage to I"rInoe.

The expedition started with bad luck. Their main base at Port Martin was destroyed by fire a Year ago and only seven men re- mained in the Antarctic when their ship. the Norwegian sealing vessel Tottan. left. They egtab- lished a new base at Geology Point. Q) miles from Port Martin. "We have proved that the Ant- arctic is no longer a place of prim- itive dog sled transport as it was as late at loan." said Mario Mar- rett, leader of the expedition. "The success we had with our weaseis tracked vehicles with cabins proves that mechanical transport is successful. Future ex- peditions will ive able to benefit by our experience and make plans which will give them more time for research."

In the middle of the winter last year Marret. decided to try to reach the burned-out camp at Port Martin in a weasel. with another Frenchman as navigator and 11:";- ert Dover, an Australian observer. they set off in the darkness. it took them E: days and for 26 days of that time they were immobil- ized by biizzards. Many friends in Prince Edward Island and Hamilton, 0nt., were shocked and saddened when they learned that Robert M. Weir had been accidentally killed in the latter city while engaged in his work as a lineman with the Ham- ilton Hydro Co.

Death is sad at any time b t especially when it comes so sua- denly and to one so young. Rah- ert was just 20 years of age, but. In his short life he had made a host of friends. which fact was exemplified by the'very large at- tendance at the funeral. Officials of, the Maritime Electric Co., of which the deceased had at one time been an employee, attended in a body. as did also the office staff of Canada Packers.

A funeral service, conducted by Rev. Rawson, was held from the Robinson Funeral Home, Hamli- ton on Wednesday afternoon, Jan- uary 28th. The remains were then conveyed by train to Charlotte- town where the funeral was held from the residence of Mrs. C. D. MacLure, 286 Grafton St.. to Triti- lty United Church on Sunday afternoon. February 1st. The ser- vices, both at the church and the grave, were conducted by the pas- tors of the church, Rev. J. Frank MecLean and Rev. J. T. Irwin, assisted by Rev. W. D. MacPher- son. The hymns sung by the choir were: The Lord's My Shepherd and Safe In The Arms of Jesus. Interment was in the People's Cemetery.

There also is a fire fighting service in the village but the fire fighters carry their own water to the fires as well as the chemicals used..

Dollar Differential

Mr. H. F. McPhee. Q.C . appear-

ing for the Parkdale Commision- ers, took issue with Mr. Martin over the "dollar differential" in the tax rats in this city and Park- dale. He maintained it had no bear- ing on the case before Commission- er Trainor. Mr. Martin thought it did as residents of this city, until the year 1917, had to pay an in- stallation tax for water equipment and he wondered if that one extra dollar spent in Parkrialc would pay similar charges. Mr. J.O.C. Campbell, Q.C. rep- resentlng the Province. asked re- garding the water mains and was told by Mr. McAleer that one led to Falconiwood. A general discus- sion in the inquiry room began and Mr. Stewart Iva, Charlottetown Water Commissioner, said that this main to Falconwood carried city water supplied to the hospital. It also had several private leads off it to furnlsih water to people on its route,

Mr. McAleer said that some 8 or 10 residents on St. Peter's Road paid for and ran their own water connections to join the water main coming to the city via the Mount Edward Road. It is purely a private arrangement.

Mr. Campbell asked if the com- munity and the residents of Spring Park had ever made any real con- certed effort to join in solving the water and sewerage problem, but was told that to the best of the knowledge of the witness, no over- turn had been made. Mr. McAleer said that the land on which the spring Park area. exists is lower lying than that of Parkdale and as n. consequence iihe ""' , I-1" problem would be greater than in his village.
