The offcial reports of business failures throughout Canada show a marked de crease over previous years. The Upper

Province papers note the change and pre- dict that next year will be # prutparous one throughout Canada,

Toronto Empire : Canadian pessimists would be delighted if certain things hap pened. If crops were light, wages lower, sugar dear instead of cheap, farmers poor instead of realizing on large returns, for- eign trade decreasing instead of expanding, bank deposits going down in place of up, and, above all, if people were utterly blind to the benefits which moderate protection in these and other ways confers upon the country.

The Montreal Gazette's St John cor- respondence says : Sir William Whiteaway ix too old to blush, as he well might do, as he shakes Canadian deputies by the hand at Halifax. He ought to have prevented all the recent unpleasantness between the country and Canada, and being at the head of such a powerfal party, could easily have done so. It is said he is rather reluctant to go on this depatation. I am nvt sur- prised at this. Such a meeting must be to him somewhat uncomfortable.

—The taxpayers of the province of Que- bec have to suffer for the extravagance of the Mercier Government. On the first of October the provincial taxes had to be paid. Lawyers, doctors, dentists, engin- eers and all professional men had to pay a

tax of six dollars to the cities and three-

doliars elsewhere. Manufacturers are as sessed $50 for every $60,000 or less of cap- ital invested Tobacco manufacturers had to pay from $100 to $600, and merchants from $30 to $80. It seems that almost everybody had to psy something as 4 result of the extravagance of the Mercier clique.

—Ths London Standard’s Berlin corres- pondent saya: ‘*At the meeting of the geographical Society on Saturday the pres- ident, Biron Richthopen laid on the table a book prepsred by the society with Em- peror Willism's help. The work is entitl- ed * The Discovery of America and its lm- portance With Relation te Knowledge of the Shape of the Earth.’ The book con- tains 40 mips, 24 of which have been little kaown, even to geographers, and are now published for the first time. The work is dedicated to the Emperor, who con- tributed $15,000 towards the expense of publication The Minister of Education has sent to ths Geographical Society copies of two letters wiitten by Columbus and re- cently found in an old convent in Guate- mala.”

-The London Times publishes descrip- tions of the five new cruisers of the French navy at present under construction. It ap- pears that the Dupay de Lome, Charner Bruix, Chanzy, and Latouche Treville, are armored boats, slimmer than the Blake or Edgar class of British cruisers, forced

and inferior in speed even at draught. Working at natural draught the Dapuy de Lome will, however, do her

seventeen knots. Her armaments will be of a somewhat novel and interesting char- acter. Her two large military masts will be pierced, aad in the interior of each will be a winding stsircase leading to a conning tower, necessarily a miniature of the con- ning tower 4s seen in the Blake. The ships will cost $2,250,000 a piece before they can be ready for sea.

— A New Yorker and his wife who have been spending « holiday on the north shore of Lake Superior, are now edifying the readers of a native magazine with blood- curdling accounts of their perilous deings in **Darkest America.” The lady declares she is the first white woman to set foot on these wild regions,” The Manitoba Liberal says: ‘‘This will be news to the thousand and one white women and child- ren who came to Manitobs and the North- west via Port Arthur, Rainy and Lake of the Woods in the sixties and seventies.” The Empire says: ‘“‘It is rather surprising that the New York tourists did not plant the Stars and Stripes on the north shore and pre-empt a!l the country west of the Pacific in the name of the President of the United States American enterprise and travel are astounding, truly.”

-Manitoba is to be congratulated upon harvesting one of the finest crops the prov- ince has eojysd for years. Reports re- cently gathered by the Canalian Pacific Railway Telegraph Company show fully ninety-five per cent. of grain to have been cut, and over twenty per cent stacked. Not the slightest dimsge has been done by frost, and the sample is a magnificent one. Nothing more couil bo asked. A Wiani peg piper speaking of the reports says: **What more could bso asked? The facts which they report are of momentous im- port to ths Province. They mean that prosperity has come, They mean a great rush of mmmigrants; they mean plenty of money ani good times all round. A great harvest has been safely garnered, and Man- itobans can afford to rejoice and be thank- ful. The reports speak for themselves.

Rev. W. E. Gifford has been found guilty of immorality by a committee of the Rock River Conference ot the Methodist church in session at (Chicago, aud his expulsion from the ministry recommended. Gifford fainted whea told of the verdict.

The St. John Sun reports that Mr. Leonard Morris, of Summerside, has been appointed New Bruaswick agent of the Union Mutual Insurance Compiny of Maine, with head = at St. John, and will enter upon his

name of the clever cartoonist is well-known aud the knowledge that he would produce his amusing sketches was sure to draw a 3ut in addition to the sketches, treated his audience to many excellent imjersomations of eccen- tric character, and imitated in a most laughable way the fo'-de-rol style of con- cert vocalist. Indeed the uproarious laughter which his rendition of the man- nerisms of the singers prov:ked, proved that this feature of the entertainment was enjoyed to the full.

As to the sketching. must remembered that Mr. did arrive here till yesterday evening, and had only two hours to lock around. tle must have looked sarvuund to some advantage, fur the pictures he made of il celebrit- ies, were, with one exception, ]fe-like. The “dry goods slaughter s:le” furnished him with the subjects for two sketches, the principal characters in which were quickly recognized, amid much laughter and ap- plause. Meeting of Presbytery.

‘Lhe Presbytery of P. E. Island met at St. John, N. B, October 8th. The deep- est sympathy was expressed for Rey. A. A. McKenzie in his present illness, and Rev. M. Campbell waa appointed to preach at West and Clyde Rivers on the 23rd inst.

A most satisfactory report was received from Mr. Finlayson, who labored at Bon- shaw during the summer. The people of that section were highly commended for the liberal way in which they have sup- ported ordinances in that place. Rev. M Campbell was appvinted to preach at Bon- shaw on the 23rd at 7 p. m.

Rev. J. G. Cim+ron reported from Dan- das. The Presbytery thanked Mr. Cam- eron fur the interest takeu in that congre- gation, and expressed their appreciation of thz loyalty and fidelity of the peuple of that place

Rev. A B. Metiaod laid on the table his resignation of the pastoral charge of Mt. Stewart and West St. Peter's The clerk was instructed to exchange with Mr. McLeod on the 23d inst , and cite the con- gregatioa to appear for their interests ata meeting of Presbytery to be held at Sum merside on Wednesday, Nov. 2ud.

The report of the committee on recon- struction of congregation was received. On motioa it was agreed that New Glasgow and Huc:er be disj»ined from Cavendish, and be united with Brooktield. Owing to the central position uf Hunter River, the Presbytery expressed the hope that at some time in_ the future all the sections of this most eucouraging field of labor will agree to have the manse at that place. The members of Presbytery spoke in terms of highest commendation cf the congregation of Cavendish, Stanley and Rustico, for the spirited effort made to render this reconstruction possible.

Rev. J. McLeod was appointed to preach at Brookfield, New Glasgow and Hunter River on the 18th inst., and make known the action of Presbytery.

The Presbytery adjourned to meet at Summerside Wednesday, Nov. 2d, at 11 o'clock, a. m.

THE DISEASE,

Peruvian advices say the influenza is making terrible ravages in Lima. On some days the deaths reach thirty. The

streets are almost deserted. and funeral processions are seen nearly every hour during the day. It is estimated that up to the present over 30,000 persons have been attacked with the disease in Lima

The disease has spread with alarming rapidity at the port cf Turin. According to the reports the number cf persons attacked with the disease is very large in proportion to the population, and deaths are counted by the dozens daily.
