Arrittery Ixsrection.— Col. frwin will arrive here in the steamer from Pictou this evening, and will inspect the two city batteries of Artillery on Monday after- noon. The exercises will begin with in- fantry drill at the park, and will conclude with 40-pounder Armstrong breech-loading yun drill at the shed.

A Hawpsome Mepat.—We were to-day shown the handsome gold medal awarded by President Irving to the best all-round athlete competing at the Scottish games, and which was won by D. A. Stewart, of Brudenell. The clasp bears the inscrip- tion, ‘* Scotland for ever, 1889,” and in the centre of the medal is engraved the lion rampant.

Tue Crry Scnoots.—It is pleasing to learn that the greatest care is being taken to prevent the spread of scarlet fever among the pupils attending the city schools. No pupil in whose family the disease ex- ists is allowed to attend school; in fact, all in any way infected are rigidly excluded. Paren‘s of pupils need, therefore, have no scruples about sending their children to school at once,

Death or a Youne “Precerror.”—A few days ago Mr. John McLean, M. P. P., of Souris, had a very fine year and a half colt injured while jumping over a fence-—a picket entering the breast and passing backwards several inches into the flesh. All the local veterinary skill that could be secured failed to save the life of this pro- mising young scion of Nutwood, and on the morning of the 22d he tranquilly breathed his last.

A Portrait Parstine BY AN IsLAND ARTIST. -In Mr. J. H. Hooper's drug store, the Souris headquarters of THe DatLy EXAMINER, may be seen a very fine portrait painting of Col. Montizambert, of the Citadel, Quebec, The painting is from the brush of Capt. James Brenan, Souris Artillery Company. The re- semblance to the original is most striking and life-like. This is not the first time we have had occasion to notice Capt. Brenan’s produc- tions as a portrait painter. They show that he possesses talents of a high order for that class of painting; and there is no doubt if he could devote himself entirely to the cultiva- tion of the fine arts, he would soon class among the foremost painters of the Dominion.

Maybrick’s Sentenee Com- muted. Lonpon, Aug, 23.
Mrs. Maybrick’s sentence has been coin- muted to penal servitude for life. The Maybrick committee has resulved to agitate for pardon on the ground that the decision of Home Secretary Matthews shows a reasonable doubt whether Maybrick was poisoned.
Liverpoot, Aug. 23.
The official messenger bearing the an- nouncement of the commutation of Mrs. Maybrick’s sentence did not reach the jail until 3 o'clock this morning, The news was at once communicated to the prisoner, who betrayed some emotion, but not to the extent anticipated. The chaplain visited her at breakfast time—a revulsion of feeling had then prostrated her—and she seemed easier than at any time since her arrest. It is feared she will not live long in jail. Brierly, her alleged paramour, sailed for Boston on the steamer Scythian yesterday.

Engine and Rails.
Hawkessury, C. B., Aug. 23.
The first-class engine for this end of the Cape Breton Railway was _ successfully landed on Point Tupper to-day, together with a carload of rails, and a steam shovel that cost upwards of $6,000. It came throngh from Toledo. The track jis laid about six milesout from the wharf, and if the rails can be supplied the working engine will be running to River Dhius by the middle of September.

Cartridges and Rites.
Vienna, Aug. 23. The Bulgarian authorities have purchased 10,000,000 of cartridges in this city, and are negotiating with Belgian manufacturers for 50,000 rifles.
Cable Connection. Orrawa, Aug. 23. The Canadian Pacitic Telegraph Company claim to have made connection with the Mackay-Bennett cable at Canso, and will shortly undertake to send cable messages direct to Europe via Canso.
Prisoner Released. Orrawa, Aug. 23. Thomas Humble, who was sentenced to three years in the penitentiary for shooting an Intercoloniai Railway porter named Miners, has been released by order of the Dominion Government.

THE interprovincial lawn tennis tourna- ment was concluded yesterday afternoon, and the prizes were presented by Mr. A. B. Warburton, President of the Charlotte- town Club, and Mrs. Macdonald. The visiting players left for their respective homes this morning, well pleased with their trip, and delighted with the manner in which they were entertained while in the city.
Yesterday the first set plaved off wag the final in the mens’ singles, Lloyd meeting Hensley. ‘The’ play throughout was re- markably fine. Mr. Lloyd, however, proved too strong for his opponent, and carried off the cup. Mr. Lioyd played for Antigo- nish. The score was 6-2; 6-4.
The contest for the ladies singles between Miss Burpee and Miss DesBrisay, was then resumed, and the final set played. Despite some very skillful play on tho par{ of taé latter, the St. John lady came’ off victori- ous. Score; 6-4-6; 3-6-2,
The final contest in mixed doubles came next, Mr. Smith and Miss Smith taking the racquet against Mr, Stewart and M. Ball. Three hard-fought setts resulted in a a vic- tory for the former. Score: 0-6-7; 6-3-5.
The concluding contest for the prize in this event then took place between Mr. Brecken and Miss Des@rigay against Mr. Sinith and Miss‘amith. The hardest-fought sets of the tournament were thea played out, resulting in 4 well earned victory for Mr. Brecken and Miss DesBrisay. The score : 6 3-8; 3-6-6.
The finals for mixed doubles have not yet been played. They will be contested by three teams from the home club.
