newly elected to city coun-

cil during Charlottetown civic elections Monday.

Mr. Stewart and R. Wilson Ross, an employee of the department of labour, will represent ward four on the council.

Mr. Stewart said in an interview with this paper Tuesday, his decis- ion to run for an alder- man position was aided by his recently expired position on the Unit Three School Board.

He said working on the

school board stirred his

interest in community affairs such as with the school safety patrol program.

With time to devote and an interest in civic politics, Mr. Stewart said he executed a door- to-door campaign through- out his ward-- Grafton, Kent and Fitzroy Streets.

This type of campaign enabled him to find out what the people of his ward really wanted, chang- ed, or improved in their city.

“I am non-committal about changes yet," said the new alderman. He said to set out with a dis- tinct purpose was useless

Mr. Stewart said though, he would like to see improvements made to sidewalks, lighting and streets in the city

plus a more effective method of snow removal for the winter.

If given the choice to what committee he'd like to work on, Mr. Stewart said he'd choose either the

police or recreation committee. The interest in these areas were influenced by his work with the school board. I

prise to college sports fans that Jon Paul MacIntyre has been named the October winner of the McDonald's UPEI Athlete of the anth Award.

MacIntyre received the award in an aftemoon ceremony at Mchnald's on Tuesday afternoon.

MacIntyre was picked over five other aspirants for this nmth's award, in— cluding three people who had been ncminated during the month of September.
