Already he has about a mile of pipe laid, and has done con- siderable work on the reservoir. From 100 to 150 men are employed, and it is expected that the work will be finished this year. The reservoir is situated in a ravine between two high hills: The dam will be about 300 feet wide and 18 feet high. The work will cost sbout $40,000. Himself an artist of the Very highest order, his beautiful baritone voice having won him the highest encom- ‘um of critics in both hemispheres, he is equally popular as a composer, and some of the part songs sung by the Choir were ar- ranged by him. Asa conductor he has ‘Upreme command over the Choir and they respoud to his baton with the regularity of Sutomatons. His mastery of detail is won- derful and the high degree of proficiency Which the Choir has attained in the sing- ng of part songs is due as much, possibly to his training and direction as to their own beautiful voices.

The Birchall Case.

“ GUILTY ” THE VERDICT.

Woopsrock, Ont., Sept. 29.

Birchall was found guilty of the murder of N. Benwell at 11.30 this evening. At 10 o'clock, Blackstock, the prisoner's able counsel, began his address to the jury. He spoke five and a half hours, and made a magnilicent effort. Osler, Q. C., followed for the crown, and for four and a_ half hours reviewed the evidence in such a tell- ing manner against the accused that for the first time} since the trial Birchall ap- peared to be completely overcome. Judge McMahon spoke two and a half hours and charged agsinst the prisoner. The jury retired at 9.53, and while out Birchall re- gained his former appearence and seemed to be the most unconcerned man in the courthouse. At 11.50 the twelve jurors filed into the court room, Their looks plainly indicated their decision, and Bir- chail steeled himself for the verdict as given above. The crown prosecutor, hav- ing moved for sentence, Judge McMahon sentenced Birchall to be hanged on the 14th of November next.

The Methodist Conference.

MontREAL, Sept 29.

Owing to so many delegates having left without leave, it was ordered to call the roll and publish the names of absentees. Some had only been in attendance a short time, had drawn their expenses and gone off on business or pleasure. Such conduct was strongly condemned.

Instead of one delegate to the General Conference for every ten members of the annual conference, the number is to be one in twelve. Laymenare not to be members of stationary committees, but may appear as representatives of quarterly boards before the said committee in circuit interest. Assistant sabbath school superintendents are not members of quar- terly board. Regnlar attendance on the

The fast Atlantic scheme referred to last night by Lord Uarrington, proposes an average speed of nineteen knots. The syndicates wish an increase in the subsidy already offered by the Canadian Govern- ment.

The Governor General, who goes to open the Cape Breton Railway in the mid- die of October, will also visit the mining districts of Cumberland, Pictou, Cape Breton, and the shell works at New glasgow and Londonderry, as well as the Chignecto Ship Railway.

Lord Aberdeen visitedg the Central Ex- perimental Farm to-day, and expressed delight at the excellent management. He starts for the Pacific coast to-night.

The fast express from Halifax for Montreal consistsng of four Canadian Pacific cars in charge of Conductor Gunn, while runnin at between 35 and 45 miles an hour last evening, ran into a big pile of sleepers thrown across the track at Hayward’s, near Anagance.
