The Conservatives argued thatl the Currie report stands "intact, and in all its integrity” as a re-l stilt of Mr. Curric's testimony and that Liberal "attacks" on it have "fizzled out."

They said official figures indi- cate the Works Services handle only I0 out of every 310,000 spent by the Defence Department and that was the only branch of the whole program investigated by Mr. Currie. Yet many people thought the Currie report had probed all the defence program.

The Liberals siugested that the Conservatives were trying to play politics to shut off further dis- cussion of the Currie report and to defy the earlier decision of the Commons against a wider inquiry. They said there was no evidence to substsntistc the need for an in- quiry, that it would cost millions of dollars and probably take years. They said the Army Works Serv- ices” part of the defence effort was four to eight times larger than suggested by the Conservatives. that Mr. Currie himself had said that the irregularities had prob-1 ably all been tracked down and the cure for the situation was tak- ing effect rapidly.

They doubted that Mr. Currie would "touch another investigation with a 15-foot pole," as one Lib- eral member put it, and chided the Conservatives for "not even both: ering to ask him" while he was a witness.

Mr. Fleming replied that he is sure Mr. Currie would undertake such a mission if the Commons asked him.

Ancient Acatiian Festival Revived At Tignish

-The mid-winter festival of the gsteau which was introduced into this Province by the early Aco- dians was re-introduced in the Canadian Legion Community Centre at Tignish on Monday evening, February 2nd, after be- ing dormant for a quarter of a century. I

After the passing of the geteau, the king and queen. accompanied by the lady-in-waiting and her escort entered the hall to the strains of the Marseillaise. the na- tional anthem of France and par- aded to their thrones which were on it dais. when the Royal couple were seated the king's lieutenant crowned his majesty while the queen was crowned by her lady-in- waiting.

Mr. J. J. Arsenault, the capable Master of Ceremonies, addressed the Royal couple, expressing the pleasure which their visit gave to all their faithful subjects.

The king, on behalf of himself and his queen. thanked their peo- ple for the royal welcome which they received and offered to hold at private audience with anyone who wished to ask it favor of him. After spending some time meeting his subjects and granting privil- eges to them. the king and queen with their courtiers led the open- ing dance of the evening.

The music was supplied by the Tigriish Orchestra. Those taking part in the pageant were Auiwin N

Coal and Steel Community has been established and on Feb. 10, 1953, issued its first order under the supranational authority vest- ed in it by the parliaments of six countries. The order said that tariffs, and all forms of trade dis- crimination among them. as they affected coal. steel scrap and iron ore, would end. Two hours later the little coke train inaugurated a new era.

Similar orders will follow re- garding steel when the details have been worked out.

Already the achievement has fired Europe with the belief that this is just a start.

There are still some hedges about the operation of the community. Serious problems of operation re- main to be solved. its sponsors cannot yet be sure that it will not fall apart under pressures as yet unforeseen. But if it does not. the nations of Western Europe, their slnews of war harnessed by an authority whose charter stres- ses its non-national status. will be unable to cut. one another'a throats.

VANCOUVER. (GP)-A story of torture and humiliation suffered in Red Chins. was told Monday by four Roman Catholic nuns who or- rived here by boat, from Hong Kong.

They are Sisters st. Alphonse of st. Dorothy. Que., Mary Germaine St. Proster, Que. St. Ger- main of Pout Rouge and St. Jean Baptiste of Montreal.

All except Sister st. Germain, suffering from a leg injury-the re- suit: of a heating with a bamboo cane-are in good health.

Operated Orphanage

They operated an orphanage in Clinton for abondoned children. Many of the children were dying when found on the streets. The Reds accused them of responsibil- ity for the deaths.

Sister St. Jean Baptiste taught in 9. Canton school which the Reds closed in August, 1951. she was im- prisoned in her home.

The three Sisters who operated the orphanage and two other nuns who returned earlier to Canada

were reviled at a public trial ill Canton in December. 1951. 'l'bey were sentenced to five years in prison.
