P. B. Island and the N. P. |
Trat greater advaniage has not been taken of the benefits of the National Poliey by this Province, is due not to its | unustitableness to this locality, as to the fact that the necessary capital required to embark in new enterprises is held by men whose tastes and inclinations do not lead them to the bustle and worry of business. A high rate of interest has hitherto been obtainable on mortgage loans etc., with which there is little care | attendant. But as the rate of interest is | rapidly falling, aud will probably con- tinae to do so, people will begin to cast about for other chanucls in which to in- vest their funds. This is being partly done at the present time in the erection of starch factories, for which the N. P. bids fair to create a home demand in the cotten mills of Halifax, St. John, St. Stephea and other places in the Mari- time Proviuces.
It is a matter requiring fair investiga- tion whether this Island is not suited for the eétton wavufacture. The length of our winters may seem to be against it, but that season of the year is devoted usually to accumulating stocks for the spring and summer trades. Coal ean be laid down hereabout as cheaply as any place; laber can be had much more cheaply than in St. John, particularly duriag the w®bter months; and our climate is mere suited for steady work than that of the United States or the Upper Provinces. It is an industry capable of almost unlimited ex- tension, since Canada at the present time has a leys number of spindles at work | than the town of Fall River, in the Unit- ed States; and while from the U. 8. ratio Canada should have at least 1,000,- 000 spindles in operation, she has only some 200,000.
Another industry, particularly suited to this Island would be the mauufacture of coarse blankets, horse rugs, &c., for which a market at our doors is provided in the lumber camps of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, aul among the hardy fishermen ef our shores and Newfoundland Our cloth factories have hitherto been taxed to their utmost capacity to supply ourown demand, and no means have been taken to push the sale of our cloths in the neighbouring provinces, where their superior lasting qualities would quickly displace the imported cheap shoddy cloths.
The manufacture of agricultural im-
“plements is one which ought to be
largely prosecuted here. The imported iron, of which they are chiefly made, passes our Province on its way to Onta- rio, pays freight botl: ways, agents’ com- missions, etc., before it reaches the con- sumer here.
In the same way woodenware and car- riage material, which from their bulky nature must pay heavy railway charges, are also wholly imported. Of course many of these industrles are beyond the means of any one man, but by means of incorporated companies the amounts re- quired could be raised. We have men of as good business capacity as in any other city, aud all that is needed is to enlist some of the money lying idle in the Savings and other banks. In the keen competition that may arise in later years, the odds will be in favor of the man with the newest and most economical machin- ery, cheap coal and labor, The former is obtainable by close investigation, while the latter we already have.
Mr. Bleke’s Visit.
We have called attention to two im- portant omissions on the part of Mr. Blake.
His omission to explain how it is that he finds that the Island has received from Canada over a million dollars more than it has paid into the Dominion Treasury, while his followers here declare that the Island has paid into the Dominion Treasury some two or three millions of dollars more than it has received ; and—
His omission to propound definitely a policy in support of which his followers can unite.
We have now to call attention to an important admission :
Mr. Blake admits that there has been a great improvement iu the business and trade of the country! How does this admission consist with the prophesies of ruin and retrogression with which Mr. Blake's colleagues and supporters have made Canada bideous? Shall we re- mind our read: rs of what these prophesies were? Take afew examples. In 1879, Mr. McKenzie said:
*«*] have indicated my views as far as time would permit me. [ trust by fair argument to show that the policy of hon. gentlemen op- posite (the Nationa’ Policy) is wrong. If this patter should prove right, and I should live eng enough to find that it is right, I should be the first to acknowledge it. But, sir, | believe that this is humanly impossible. Nothing but a mira: le could make that policy * success. I believe it is contrary te the lawe of nature, and that it is contrary to the beneticence of the Maker of the world. It is contrary to all jus! laws, human and divine, which tend to ameliorate the condition ef mau, and show the beneticence that all Leg- islatures should shew to their people,”

Again, Mr. Charlton, for whose views on this question we have quite an inter- est, said:
“To sum up with regard to this remark able National Policy, let me present, Mr. Speaker, briefly a ‘ew of the salient points in regart to it. In the first place it will rob the farmer, in the secoiul place it will rob the lumberman, in the third place it will rob the fisherman, in the fourth place it wil] rob the laborer, in the fiftl, place it will rob the ship- owners, in the sixta place it will rob every

We learn that the Government have appointed a Commission, under ** The Public Enquiries Act, 1879,” to investi- gate all matters relating to the manage- ment of the Hospital forthe Iusane. The Commission consists of Hon. A. A. Macdonald, Rev. Geo. W. Hodgson, and Charles C. Gardiner, Esq. The action of the Government in this respect is commendable, and we thisk a better Commission for the purpose than the above could not be appointed,

Messrs. Biake, Anglin and Hunting- ton at Georgetown.

Messrs. Blake, Anglin and Huntington have come and gone without exciting that great entusiasm or receiving anything like the reception we were led to expect. About forty persons, many-of whom were Con- servetives, were at the station to receive them. No excitement, no enthusiasm, not even a passing word of admiration could be heard.
The meeting, which was called for 2 o'clock, was a decided failure. Not more than 130 persons were present, and at least one fourth of these were Conservatives who attended to hear the addresses of the ‘* Great Liberal Statesmen of the day.” Roderick Munroe presided, and in his own inimitable style, opened the meeting. Doctor Robertson, of Montague, then in a very shakey manner, read an address of welcome, the purport of which, notwith- standing the very emall audience, could not be heard. Mr, Blake rose to reply to the address, and after a few general re- marks settled down to the hard task he has taken upon himself to accomplish. His speech was a rehash of that delivered in the Rink, in Charlottetown, on Monday night, as was also that of Mr. Anglin. Mr, Huntington said a few words at the con- clusion of Mr. Anglin’s speech, exhorting his hearers te be true to Canada and Can- ada’s interests no matter ‘who held the reins of Government, and on retiring was cheered to the echo. The spplause through- out was feeble, and always started by L. U. Davies, who appeared to be ever ready to applaud the most clumsey joke or extrav- agant falsehood. When Mr. Huntington resumed his seat Dr. McIntyre came to the front to move a vote of thanks, but was so overcome by reflections on his certain defeat in °83, that he was compelled to retire not with informing the people, hew- ever, that the cause ef the Grit defeat of ’78 was the want of votes. During the exhibition Dr, McIntyre wade of himself, both friendsand epponents hung their heads to mourn the fact that we had a man iu this county with so much presumption and little brains. After Dr. MeIntyre’s ignomenious failure, the Chairman (who up to this time sat with his back to the audience) conveyed the vote of thanks to our “‘ distinguished visitors” to which Mr. Blake replied, proposing three cheers for the Queen, which were heartily given. Three feeble cheers for the three Reformers followed, and the meeting was brought toa close.
Every one, Grit and Tery, is disappoint- ed. Sir Leonard Tilley and his friends will have no difficulty in exposing those would- be reformers on their arrival, and showing to the public that they, and not the Grits, have the best interests of ‘ this Canada of ours” at heart.

importance to have been brought to his notice if he is te be our future Premier. His epinions on questions of trade may be, and probably are, worth little. But on a legal and constitutional question, such as the Fishery Award, they would, ‘at least, have weight, It is certainly singular thata ques- tion invelving a million and a quarter dollars should get the go-by while hours were spent in showimg that we were ruined because we pay a cent a ponnd more than we used to on cotton warp. The making of brass goods is almost an entirely new in dustry in Canada, and the success which has attended the moderate effort put forth proves conclusively that it is an industry for which Canada has the best facil- itieg aud one which only needed the fair play which the N.
