THE MINTO AND THE ICE.

Sir,—I notice in the Daily Patriot of the 27:h of January aa editorial in re- gard to the success of the steamship Minto battling with the ice, which is said to be written by a passenger. I most cer- tainly think that passenger has been dreamlog, a8 we in this part of the Pro- vince are at aloes to know where The Misto came acroes any ice this winier. A railing vessel could go from George- town to Pictow ali this winter, and not eas counter any ice. Now, Mr. Editor, I de net want to find fault with The Minto, but I do find fault with the Patriot editor for writing such stuff about battling with the ice whea there is no ice,a fact of which the editor of the Patriot is wellaware. I will be very sorry if Tbe Minto is not a success, as I do not enjoy throwing eo much casb away as The Minto cost to build her for no uve. When the time comes that The Minto will get into as heavy ice as The Stanley has been in, and found her way througb, then, and not tiil then will it be time to blow about The Minto’s suecesa in battling with the ice.

How a Lion Charges.

A lion’s first sigus of anger are as follows: Its tail rapidly twists from side to side, the bottom slightly raising and the black tassel at the end beating the air; it lowers its head more than usual and growls, at intervals showing its teeth. Then its voice becomes loud er, it roars, shows its teeth and lowers its ears, the movements of the tail in- creasing all the time.

At the time of charging—that is, at the height of its anger—the tail rises in the air until it is almost vertical, the black tassel continues to move, the ears are flattened completely, and the ani- mal comes toward you at a slow trot, then at a gallop, and finally springs forward with open mouth and extend- ed claws.

Sometimes it shows these various syroptoms without charging, restrained by prudence, but it never charges with-

out showing them. When the tail rises, ;

the hunter can bring his rifle to the shoulder and await his opportunity. In hunting, a man who is on his guard is worth four.

A charge is extremely dangerous, al- most aiways fatal when unexpected, either because of the dense vegetation or other causes, but if you see the ani- mal getting ready flight is useless. Stand your ground. The only thing to do is to keep cool and trust Im your weapon. If you have no corfidence in yourself it {s prudent to avoid measur- ing your strength against these anl- mals,
