If by “dark and degraded state of the Micrnsc tribe" be mans their poverty, migratory habits, and social inferiority, I say the Catholic Church is not responsible for this; Shslms no lands at her disposal to bestow on them, nor funds to cslalillsll schools; and, indeed, schools without periiinnetit hnbitsiions, would be useless, as they could not attend them. The attempt to cast raprsueb on the Catholic Church, is as unjust as it is Ingenu- mas; and the reproach, if reproach there he, must fall some where else. If by "dark and degraded state." he tncans their religious stats. I say again, that he is an inrotiipctent and prsjadinud Judge in this rnntter, and can have but a very imperfect and incorrect knowledge of their religious stats and prac- tice. whatever was done for the Indians, was done by the Catholic Church, and it comes with u very bad grace from those who have done nothing, except holding meetings and drafting resolutions, in Cbarlotisiown. to reproach her for not having done more. At Sbediac a few rails have already been laid down, for the con- venience of the contractors in transporting their materials, a large quantity of which has been received there.
