\ SOMEWHAT novel Way of raising money for the relief of the Irish distress was attempt- edin New York on Tuesday, but the result did not realize the anticipations formed. It was that of selling at auction nine hens de- veted for the purpose of assisting the fund. There were congregated at the sale some five thousand people, a large number of whom were brokers, real estate agents and merch- ants, and the sale was ushered in with a cornet solo by the famous Levy and a serio- comic speech by the auctioneer. The prices realized were low, considering the object and the gathering, the three Brahama fowls bring- ing $35, three Plymouth Rocks $10, and the three gamefowls $15. There were, however, handed in to the auctioneer subscriptions. to the amount of $1,259.

A Horrible Crime.

The trial of Lewis Payne, for the murder of Miss MeLean by administering jlarge quantities of spirits, which took place in London, at the Central Criminal Ceurt, concluded with a verdict ef guilty of man- slaughter. Payne had seduced. Miss Mc- Lean and for some time had lived with her as her paramour, but either be- coming infatuated with a woman named Fannie Mathews, who is under indictment as an accessory lo tho crime, or wishing te posseas himself ef some property belong- ing to his mistvess,- he concected a plan with the woman Matthews to murder Miss McLean by inducing her te begin a debauch which they kept up withont intermission, continually forcing tho unfortunate woman to swallow large quantities of brandy, until she died of alcholizatien. The case for the Crown was conducted by the Attorney- General, and Payne was defended by Mr. Edward Clark. Owing to certain mitigat- ing circumstances, Payne was saved from the scaffold, but sentenced te penal servi- tude for life. Before sentence he made a long and rambling statement, protesting his innocence. The trial of Miss Mathews will immediately follow.

The Gatineau incendiary case, which has been brought to light, continues to create the greatest excitement in the vicinity of the scene of the outrage. The particulars reveal one of the deepest and darkest plots ever coneived in this district, and partake much of the character of the reign of ter- rorin Lucan in its incipient stage. Fer many monthr back dwelling houses, barns, sheds and ether preperty have been des- troyed by fire,-the origin in every case being shreuded in mystery. ‘There ap- peared io be no distinetion aa to religion, for Catholies and Protestants alike suffered. Jeane Berthe, Charles Richards, Onesime Chambrean and Auguste Martin were ar- rested. Berthe has made a full confession, showing that he had set fire te several places on promise of payment to him by Dr. Langlois and one Doyle,

lintertainment at Luratic Asylum.

On Saturday evening last a musieal En- tertainment was giver: at Faleonwood to the inmates of the Asylum. The perfermers were the Quintette Club and Messrs. Caven, Vinnicombe F. H. Beer, B. Bremner and L. W. Watson. The programme consisted cf eight pieces all of which weve well per- formed, and the audience seemed highly pleased with the Enteftainment. Dr: Blanchard kindly invited all the Editers ot the Local Press, the members of the Goy- ernineni, ihe Trustees of the Asylum and a few other prominent ¢itizens. Among those present we noticed the Hen. Com. of Public Works, Mr. W. D. Stewart, Geo. R. Beer, Esy., one of the trustees, and representatives of the Herald Araus, Patriot and New Hra. There was also a fair sprinkting of ladies. The patients who at- tended the performance numbered about forty, and not only, with ene exception, behaved in a most quiet manner, but ap- peared to thoroughly enjoy the music. That such entertainments are calculated to do much good cannot be doubted, and it is the intention of Dr. Blanchard to have them frequently. Before Ged Save the Queen was sung, Dr. Blanchard and the Com. of Public Works thanked the per- formers of behalf of both guests and in- imates. When the performance was ended Dr. Blanchard entertained his male guests, and, after the inner man was refreshed, an impromptu meeting was held, Professor Caven in the Chair. After seme remarks in this strain, it was suggested by cone present that ‘it was all very well te talk about a repetition of sueh eniertainmenis, bus it was not fair or just that Dr. Blanchard should bear the ex- penses that must necessarily be incurred,” The result of this suggestion was thata subscription list was opened and seventy dollars subscribed, J. F. Montgomery, Esq., heading the list with ten dollars, and Hon. D. Ferguson followed with an equal amount. It was agreed that these sums, te- gether with others that may be given, should be paid to F. Mitchell, Ksq., at the Merchants’ Bank of Halifax, to be used by Dr. Blanchard to provide musical and other entertainments for the inmates of

‘the Asylum. We did not intend criticis-

ing the performance, but while listening to it we were struck with the peculiar fit- ness ef the words of a beautiful poem written in 1815 by Leigh Hunt, entitle “A Thought on Musie,” and as it is not generally known, we will conclude with an extract from it :-—

“To sit with duwnward listening and cross knee,

Half conscious, half unconseious, of the throng

Of fellow eara, and hear the well-met skill

Uf fine musicians-+the glib ivery

Twinkling with numerous prevalence—the snatch

Of brief and birdy flute, that leaps apart—

The Famine in Ireland.

The latest despatches show that the famine is very severe in Galway ; that in many other districts distress prevails and that in some it is spreading. The New York Herald's des- patches give importaut details. We have enly room for a short statement: ‘‘ A corres- pondent on Her Majesty’s cunboat Goshawk, which is distributing meal among the western islands, writes from Innishark, off Galway : it isa terrible state of affairs. Fifty families here eke out a miserable existence. Their houses are small heaps of dirty stones. heir land is rock and seft bog. Hunger and want are everywhere visible. ‘The people go naked and without food. Many are slowly starving to death. Such scenes of appalling destitu- tion I never before witnessed, Every step we took brought before our view new and more fearful pictures of deatitution and suffering. The more we saw the more certain did deat frem starvation appear the inevitable fate of nearly every man, woman and child on the is- land. Gaunt, thin and pale were the faces of men who were vaturally of herculean build, The features of the women and children were overspread by the ghastly paller of hunger. in many cabins children creuched, shivering and almost naked, around the fre. When | entered they sprang behind their mother, whose single garment—a thin dress—was but the slightest protection against the wind which blew through the broken reef. On the fire was the dinner—a pot of browa green sea- weed. It is certain that, unless they are well cared for, dezens wiil die of starvation. The same correspondent writes from innisbeftin coneerning the shocking ee on the part of the officials there. The Gevern- ment dispensary officer had no drngs, the re- lisving officer ne food. One woman, at least, had died in consequence. Phe peor-law in- spector had not visited the Island for three years. The Mansion. House Committee, on Feb, 26, distributed £40,000. If the distsess lasts till August, a distribution at the same rate would require £184,000.” -
