Benjamin Hodgson Baker, son of Flish

Hody «mn, who, at a time whan the Baker family were in financial difficulties through no faul oO bueir own, gencr usly cameto their rescue rreeing the tarm, thus saving the old home stead trem the grip of the mortgagee. This kindly act on the part of Mr. Hodgson was aever forgotten by the Baker family, and it was in commemoration of it that the eub- ject of this notice was named.

Hodgson Baker, from earliest youth, was 4s favorite in the home circle, while at schvol he was beloved by all his fellow schoolmates. When quite young he dis played talent for music, vocsl and instru mental, and for several years led the sing- ing school of the settlement. [ie was what might be called a natural genius ip the mechanical art, and in the home of his boyhood may be seen articles useful as well as ornamental, the handiwork of his skill- ful hands. When but a youth he went tou serve his apprenticeship at carpentering with W. R. Dingwell, of Souris, and after- wards went to Buston, where he worked at his trade for several years. He left the Island last September fur the States, where he st once found employment. On the 10th vf February, afew minutes after going to work in the morning, he was engaged in taking dowa sume stage brackets, when his fuot slipped and he fell a distauce of 35 feet, breaking both wriste and fracturing his elbow and thigh. He was taken as soon as possible after the accident to the Massachusetts General Hospital, and well cared for. He did not lose @onsciousnesa, and was quite hopeful of recovery, asking « friend to write home to that effect. Oa the 15th however, five days after the accident, death closed his earthly existence. His way was sent home, arriving on the 28th. t was met at Suuris station by a number of sympathiz ing friends who tenderly conveyed 1t to hus late home. On opening the casket the body was found tv be almost as natural looking. as in life, having been embalmed

and placed in a zine case before leaving the hospital. Neighbors and acquaintances fluckkd in to see the once familiar form, and many tears

THE m-mbers of the Pi qaid Debating S:ciety met in their club room on the even- ing of March 14th, tu discurs the important question, *‘Which is the more preferable for the suppression of the iquor traffi: in Canada ~ Prohibition or High License ?” In this discussion they were ably assisted by some of the members of the Gl-nfinnaa Debating Club, and also by some members of the Monaghan Road Club The following gentlemen upheld the side of prohibition: J. J. McDonald, Daniel Birr, W. J. O'Donnell, and Jonathan Birt, while the sde of high license was ably maintained by A J McDonald, J. Garland, Jas. McDonsld, J. M. Reardun, and L. P. McLaughlin. The various merits aad demerits of both sidea of this great question were laid before the audience in a masterly manner, not- withstanding the fact that most of the speakers had never heard the eubject dis- cussed before. After a very animated and highly-instructive discussion, the chairman, Mr. John A McDonsid, gave the decision in favor of prohibition.
