Fisu,—Aceording to Hatheway & Co.’s re- port, P. E. Island Mackerel have been selling at $11 and $13 per bri., unculled; $10 for No. 3. S11 and $12 for No. 2; and $14 and $!5 for No }. Dry Coafish are selling at $2.50 and $2 75 per quintal for large Bank, but itis not easy to get the outside price.

Pork.—Dealers report a continued good jemand for Pork, and pricec are well main- tained, Mess commands $16.50 and $17; clear at $18 and $18.50; and backs S19 and $19.25 per bri.

Smokep Hams—Prices continue steady at 12 and 134 cents per Ib. including small and large :

Larp—There have been further sales of Western and Boston at 7} and &} cents per lb.

Our quotations are for large lots. Small lota range higher.

Ecos —There has been a good demand for strictly fresh eggs, which are scarce, but other kinds are dull and easy. A large quan- tity of held stock is arriving, and for such there is not much call. Nova Scotia and P. E. Island eggs sell at 26 and 27 cents. —

Porarors—Receipts of potatoes are liberal, but with a guod trade, there is very little accumulation and prices are fa‘rly maintained.

Paris, Nov, 20.

Le Paris says that Gen. Briere de Lisle commander of the French forees in Ton- quin, telegraphs that the Chinese had inade a Vigorous attack on the French gunboats Nauclaire and Tromber, as they were pro- ceeding along the River Claire, after revitualling the garrisons at Tu Yenquan. One sailor was killed and cight wounded. Eighty thousand Chinese are coming down the Red River but he is ready to meet them.

Sudden Death.

Woopstock, N. B., Nor. 20.

A seusation was caused this morning by the intelligence cf the sudden death of James H. Jacques, customs officer, The deceased was attending to his official duties as usual yesterday, but this mornin, he was taken suddenly ill and died in a few minutes. The probable cause was heart disease. He was much respected.

A Respite. Orrawa, Nov, 20. Mrs. Bontel, who was to have been hanged in Quebee at eight o’clock this morning, was resvited for eight days. The sentence will likely be commuted to im- prisonment for life.
