The January meeting of the Spring Valley W. I. was held at the home of Mrs. Robert Glover on Dec. 31st. In the absence o1 the President, the 2nd vice-presi- dent opened meeting by singing the ode and repeating creed in unison. Ten members and four visitors were present. Minutes of former meeting were read and approved. The report o! com- mittees followed.

Sick committee: no calls.

School contmittee: visited the school and purchased new blinds for school, and also stated that towels were needed for school. It was moved we purchase some the first opportunity. Committee also reported purchasing treat for school children. All bills were presented and moved to be paid.

CENTRAL BU'I'I'E.— John Jos- eph Mulqueen. who is in his 18th year. met his share of notable people while a telegraph operator in the United States, but despite this fact. he gave up the railroad business and got himself a farm in Saskatchewan.

Born in Waterloo. Iorwa, in I069, Mr. Mulqueen recalls having seen that great showman Buffalo Bill ti Waterloo ln 1901.

It was while rlding'a train from Cakes, N.D., to Beligrade, Mont, Lhiii. he first encountered "Cala- mity Jane" the American woman who cared for two hundred miners who were strlokcn with typhoid fever. Although she wasn't a nurse tier treatment proved effective in av case. and she never lost a single patient. but here was a wo- man with a. heart of gold who was really rough.

Mr. Mulqueen said that. when he first. saw the famous woman. so named because of the calamity through which she had helped the znincrs, she resembled a squaw in rppearance. She chewed tobacco like s veteran, and spat into the cuspidor across the aisle with amaz- ‘ng accuracy. ,

Mulqucen also met the Dalton brothers, famous outlaws of the early days. when he worked at Rock Island. He recalls the time when Major General Hancock ran for president in 1800.

For 3'7 years Mr. Mulqueen was a. telegraph operator and station master mostly on the CNR. at Biadworth and Rosthcm. He would work six months and farm six months until he had his own home bought sud paidjor.

Referring once again to "Calamity Jane" in Connection with the In- diana. Mr. Mulqueen said she acted as a scout for Wild Bill l-lickock when the Iradtans would go on the rampage in the early days. When she died, 10.000 persons attended her funeral. Her life had been a rough and hectic one. and when she travelled by rail you could always find he; in the smoker. Few people ever lmew her right name. which was Clara Barton. She was buried
