Convention Of s At Miscouche

niand Canadian Legion, B.E.S.L., at the 22nd annual convention held yesterday at Miscouche un- der the auspices of the Misoouche Branch of the Canadian Legion.

Out of 24 Branches in the Prov- ince 18 were represented with 39 delegates present. l

The report submitted by Pre- sident Earl Cannon indicated that the increase of membership this year over the previous year was about 15 per cent with the mem- bership this year standing at 1368.

The splendid work done by Can- adian Legion branches in rural areas in sponsoring Boy Scouts, sports and other worthwhile noti- vities was emphasized by Mr. Earl

' G. Cannon, president of the Pro-

vincial Command, when he pre- sented his annual report to the Legion convention at Mlscouchc yesterday.

Mr. Cannon said that frequently the Legion was the only service organization in an area and not- ed that it was gratifying to see them take the lead in community affairs.

He told the convention that the new zoning system in effect wherein the Province was divided into six instead of three zones as in the past was working admir- ably. The smaller units gave zone commanders is greater opportunity of visiting the branches within his orbit and zone rallies can now he held without the great amount of travelling formerly needed.

Mr. Cannon spoke of,the in- creased membership and said the Legion in this Province was en- tering "a period of Rennaisance" following it decline in interest noticeable a few years after the inflationary period following the war. He said the new membership increase was more stable than be- fore and he predicted great things for the future.

The president said the Legion had had a. representative sit on all Dominion Civil, Service Boards held in the Province, thus assur- ing that the interest of the vet- eran is protected whether or not he is entitled to satutory Prefer- ence. p ".2

Death On Sunday Of Mr. Alfred Reid

The a Island Hospital, on Sunday after- noon, oi Mr. Alfred George Osler Reid in his 54th year.

The late Mr. Reid. was born in Dundee, Scotland, the son of ms. William Reid and the late William Reid and came to Canada at an early age. He attended school in Montreal and St. John, N. B. It was from this city that he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Engineers with which unit be served over- seas during World War I.

Shortly after returning from overseas. the family rnoved to the Island where they acquired a. farm at Franc rt. Mr. Reid became prominent as a breeder of Ayr- shire cattle and purebred sheep.

In 1945 he moved to Charlotte- town where he was successively employed by Atlantic Wholesalers and Central Creameries Ltd.

He was a. Past. Master of st. John's Lodge No. 1. AI". as AIM, to member of Alexander Chapter, No. 11 Royal Arch Masons. He was a Knight Templar and Pre- siding Preceptor Elect of Prince Edward Preceptory. He was 1 member of the Cryptic Rite. Gar- den of the Gulf Council. He was :3. 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason. a member of the Halifax Consistory, and was it former trustee of St. James Presbyterian

The 375-acre Monks Wood, one of the few rcmnininir examples Hunlingdonshire ash oak wood- lands and containing many rare plants and insects, is to be pre- served as a nature reserve. The first black hair-streak butterly was found there in 1828.

However when the ship was off Fitzroy rock in Hillsboro Day, it became apparent that they would be unable to make port. on a clever decision of the command- ing officer, they proceeded up Pownai Bay where they tied up at Halliday's Wharf. The crew pm- ceeded from there to Charlotte- town by car.
