one o'clock. [I parted from him at the

market, but I met him that evening again

about five or six o’clock near Baldwin’s Store. I was with him then till seven or half-past seven. He walked down to end

of Ferry Wharf with me where we separa-

ted, I returning to Southport. He told me

he wanted to see Mr. Theo. Farquharson

about the house at Southport that night,

consequently he would not go across, as he

had business to keep him in. town.

Here the Coroner read evidence of John

Anderson to witness in which he swears he

saw deceased coming up off slip, evidently

from Southport.

The Witness—-I am positive he did not

go over to Southport in the same boat with me. We parted at the head of the

wharf, and Mr, Anderson met him as he

left me. He appeared all right on that

occasion and did not seem to be the worse of liquor. I can’t say I saw him take liquor that evening. We went into Union House together, and I think he drank some ale or lager.

To the Jury.—Mr. Anderson went over in same boat with me. As to the house at Southport, we agreed to offer Theo. Far-

quharson a certain rent. He wanted to know if I could not come to town next day, Saturday. Nearly all the time that we were together in town, we walked up and down the street. I noticed nothing pecu- liar or different in his demeanour, When I left him, I said I did not think I could return on Saturday as I would be busy. Changing my mind I came across on pur- pose to see him, but could not find him. I inquired for him, and could hear nothign of him. I also inquired for him on the fol- lowing Monday and Tuesday. It was thought he had gone up to Yew Glasgow. If he did not get the house he was after, he talked of going out to his brother who lives in one of the States. He wore dark clothes, black overcoat, soft felt hat, with a cord I saw the hat that was found near Pownal Wharf, and I thought it was I noticed the

To the Jury—I probably might have said to Mr. Dickinson that he went over the wharf. If 1 said so, it was because the man was missing, and as he wasin Char- lottetown that night, I thought it likely he went over the wharf. I don’t remember whether [ made the remark before or efter the hat was found, in short, 1 don't re- member making it at all. So far as I know he was a sober man.

Joux McGrecor, (sworn)—I heard sev- eral rumors as to the cause of his death, but I paid no heed to them. I had no sus- picion myself that he went over the wharf. It was my opinion he had left the Island. I heard that his friends were dragging for his body last Sabbath. I heard the hat was found before this. My reason for sup- posing he was off the Island was, that he had been up, to New Glasgow to see his friends, and he told them that if he did not get the house in Southport, he would go away. I did notsee the hat,nor could I tell
