TIMELY NOTES ON EUR. FARMING

A short time ago we made men- tion of Fromm Brothers, Ham— burg, Wisconsin, who in the years between 1940 and 1950 continual- ly enlarged their ranches they were producing in the vic- inity of 40,000 silver fox pelts.a year. In the succeeding yea-rs sil- ver fox became more difficult to sell, one of the reasons being the advent of closed cars and the prominence that was given to mink. Eventually they had to pelt all but a nucleus of their breed- lng stock.

Recently they have been adver- tising with display photos, fea— turing beautiful silver fox pelts that are now being marketed. We sent a clipping og our recent story on From Bros, that ap— peared in the Guardian, to Ed- ward Fromm, president of the company, and received the fol- lowing letter:

This is revealed by a survey of fur buyers in spec- ialty and department stores. Des- pite hopes that another fur ,might rise to challenge mink‘s header— ship and so‘stimulate sales. no new contender has appeared. It is reported, Persian Lamb, Squir— rel, Alaska Fur Seal. and others are bunched too far behind mink to seriously challenge her posi- tion.

Universally, Mid-West buyers have found that the popularity of the mink stole accounts for min-k’s continued high sale. ‘The stole is a natural for our climate’ is a phrase spoken repeatedly by fur buyers.

Several times we have men- tioned how chinchilla, that was looked on as a “fad” fur a few years ago when the little inhabi< tan-ts of the Andes Mountains were brought to United States for breeding purposes has increased in popularity and is now consid- ered one of the ultraafashionable furs. ,.

While no radical departures are foreseen on the Canadian side, the moves that may be taken in the next few months could lead to shifts in policy in the use of ,high price supports, import em- bargoes and so—called “waivers” to ignore negotiated tariff bare gains. ,

Sydney Man Takes Over Show On TV

HALIFAX —(CIP)—— Lloyd Mac- Innis, Sydney radio and television personality, takes over as master of ceremonies of the (130’s Hali— fax-produced Gazette television show tonight.

Mr. Maclnnis replaces Max Ferguson, who is now in Toronto as emcee of Tabloid.

Gazette is carried over CBHT in Halifax and CFCY-T‘V in Chair- lot-tevtown.

Mr. Maclnnis joined CJCB in Sydney in 1943. His wife is the former Florence Martin of Mount Stewart, P.E.I.

Strike At N.S. Packing Plant

SYDNEY, — (CP) -— J. R. Pineo, manager of the local branch of Canada Packers Lim- ited, Saturday declined com- ment on a strike of 36 employe- es that began Friday.

The employees. members of Local 268, United Packing‘house Workers 'of America (OLC), walked out in protest of the fir- ing of union president Russell Nearing. Picket lines were set up around the plant late Friday.

The company claims Nearing was dismissed on the complaint of a customer. The union says

Such countries as Australia and New Z c al a nd, which depend heavily on revenue from food ex- ports, have already openly crit- icized Canada and the other wealthier countries, inside and outside the Commonwealth, of maintaining restrictive. policies and of using the GATT to defend- their actions.

Their appeals led to Common- wealth agreement at the two- week Montreal trade conference last month to seek ways of tight- ening GATT rules and so provide greater protection for those coun- tries which depend heavily on in- ternational trade in food and other raw materials.

EXISTING RULES

The criticism of existing GATT rules is lasted on the view that the 10 - year - old agreement, worked out to reduce tariff walls and increase the flow of world trade, favors the industrialized countries; that the rules in trade of manufactured goods are tougher to break than those deal- ing with food. .

For example, if a country, such as Canada, is faced with food sur- pluses, it can take action under the GATT to provide price sup- ports for its producers and close down the doors on competing im- ports.

That‘s legal under the GATT, but the complainants argue the legality is merely a loophole—— any time a country wants to pro- tect its producers against imports such as butter, it can merely an- nounce pnice supports. This, in ef- fect, bans imports by undercut- ting prices.

Another complaint is based on such action taken by the United States a few years ago to seek and obtain a “waiver” from GATT members on her tariff and trade bargains dealing with farm products.

She declared that certain im- ports were so harming her indus- tries that she had to take restric- tive action even though she had signed certain agrements which signed certain agreements which bound her to keep her doors open. The U. S. got that waiver on a majority GATT vote.

Now West Germany is reported to be using such a waiver, though some of the GATT members feel she had no right under the agree- ment to do so.
