Report on Kingston Penitentiary.

Orrawa, May 18.—Mr, Martin, of Pricce Edward Island, yesterday, afternoon, brought up bis motion for correspondence between the Governments of Canada and Newfoundland concerning the. admittance of Newfoundland into the union. He took occasion to argue that new sieps towards such a union should be taken. The Liberal-Conservatives had, he said, done a great work in the consolidation of the rest of British America. The Liberals had now an opportunity to show their capacity for constructive stateemanshir.

Mr. Martin male some remarks about the previous negotiations with the ancient colony and sa.d that it would bea proper and generous thing for the Canadian Gov- ernment to place all Newfoundland pro- ducts on the free list, as we collect very little revenue from this source and New- foundland was one of the best customers in the world for Canadian products.

Mr. Martin does not agree with the view that Canada should defer the admis- sion of Newfoundlaad until the French shore question is settled. The union should, he maintains, be effected as soon as possible, and Canads should lend her

werful help in the settlement of the difficulty with France.

The motion for the correspondence de- sired was adopied.

Mr. Laurier laid on the table the report of the Commissioners appointed to investi- gate the affairs of the Kingston peniten tiary. The commissioners reported great Jaxity, disorder and want of discipline. The chief officer, Mr. Metealfe, ex-M. P., is described as worthy and faithful,

but a poor disciplinarian. There is w lack of harmony among the officers. Scandals have arison over the

purchaae of supplies by the offizers for the purposes of the institution. Ex-warden Lavall is represented as having sold sup- plies that did not belong to him to the

penitentiary. The present warden is credited with zeal and honesty, but not with com petenay. Deputy

warden Sullivan is charged with negli- gence. Surgeon Strange is said to be too old. The prison engineer, James Devlin, is accueed of taking gifts from contractors and his dismissal is recommended. The dismissal of James Wier, the steward, is also recommended for dishonesty. Patrick U’Donnell, the storekeeper, _has also re- ceived presents and his dismissal is re- commended. The retirement of the assistant storekeeper is also recommended. At presen! everything and everyboby about the prison is condemned with more or less sweeping censure. It is probable that the sweeping changes will take place.

Arnens, May 18.--The most intense excitement prevails here. All tl.c Cabinet Ministers have been assembled at the Ministry of Marine, where despatches from the front are being received. The gravity of the situation canrot be overestimated.

Despatches sent from, Domokos at 7 p. m. yesterday say that the Greek left wing bas fallen back towards the centre before thrice the number of Turks, The battle continued after sunset, but despite the yielding of the left wing the Turks were finally repuleed. General Maoro- michael was wounded.

Loxoox, May 18.—TheDasaily Tele- graph’s special correspondent with the Turkish forces in Thessaly, late last night, says: “Edhem Pasha has moved on the front, point to point, and has finally occu- pied Domokos. The Greeks have sus- tained a crushing defeat.

Arnens, May 18.—A _ correspondent at Domokos telegraphing at 1 o’clock this morning says the Turks having occupied Kitiki, the Greek troops are retreating tewards the Orthrys range on the old range on the old frontier.

Paris. May 18~—The Temps, referring to the peace terms demanded by Turkey says : “Europe cannot corsent to cession of Thessaily. On the firmness which the powers now display depends the success of the whole scheme for the reforms and peace of Europe.”

Dairy and Creamery.

Pack your butter in tubs made ef sea- soned lumber. Then the staves will not be always swelling and shrinking like the troubled sea.

Do not store your empty butter tubs in a place that is too damp. If you do, mold will grow upon the outside of them and strike in, and it will be dead sure to give the butter a taste of the grave, 80 to speak. Did you never notice that taste upon nice looking butter?

If by any mischance mold has gather- ed upon your butter tubs, chey must be either thoroughly steamed or else boiled in soda before being used again, Noth- ing short of this will destroy the mold growth. It is a tiny vegetable growth with intensely penetrative roots anda yet more penetrative flavor, which is certain to strike through into the butter.

Young calves and their mothers need for one of the first requisites plenty of sunlight and fresh, not toocold, air. By all means give them plenty of pure water too. Mothers of very young calves are more or less feverish and want to drink freely.

When a calf is 2 weeks old, it may begin to be fed on warm skimmilk with a handful of bran and a little linseed jelly in it. After a calf is 6 weeks old, add an equal quantity of ground oats to the wheat bran, and this food will do till the calf learns to eat. The quickest way to heat milk for a calf is to pour a little boiling water into it. Then there isno danger of burning the milk or ecalding the ealf’s nose.

Beware of rotten and moldy old ice boxes. They reduce many tons of other- wise good butter to soap grease.

The Canadian government is going heavily into the business of providing cold storage for keeping dairy and poul- try products, fruits and meats. The rail- ways will have cold storage cars. The government will assist with money creamery men and others who erect cold storage buildings. 54 3s
