‘ISLAND STUDIES TO HOST FIRST ISLAND INTERNATIONAL Many of the world's leading authorities on small island development will converge on Prince Edward Island's beautiful north shore this September 17th to 20th. They will participate in the first international conference, entitled An Island Living: Patterns of Autonomy and Dependence in the Small Islands of the North Atlantic, to be sponsored by the Institute of Island Studies. .

Included among the Conference speakers are former Prime Ministers of Malta and Iceland, The Honourable Dom Mintoff and Mr. Steingrimar Hermannson respectively, as well as Dr. Peter Corbin and Dr. Gerard Fischer, the leading small island specialists from the United Nations and the U.N. Conference on Trade and Development. The keynote speaker is Jean-Didier Hache, Secretary to the Island's Commission of the Conference of the peripheral Maritime RegiOns of the European Community. The concluding speaker is Dr. Francois Doumenge, Jadques-Cousteau's successor as Director of the prestigious Institut Qcéanographique in Monaco. ‘ ‘ ‘ ' _

During the first half of the Conference, the speakers will explore the forces that have encouraged self-government and administrative decentralization in small island jurisdictions during the post-war years. These panels will examine the wide range of constitutional arrangements among the islands of the North Atlantic. - . '

The second half of the conference will focus on economic issues. Panelists will consider the structural disabilities of small size for the economic development of North Atlantic small islands,.with emphasis on strategies for adaptation and self-reliant growth in an increasingly integrated global economy. . p - ’

Hal Mills of Breadalbane is the new president of the Island Nature-Trust' and is joined on the 16 member board by three new directors, Sharon Rose, Dr. Leith Thompson, and Robertson Burnett. _ '_

The Trust, under the leadership of-Fred Horne, is conducting background Studies on three rivers on the Island for the Canadian Heritage Rivers Board. These are the Hillsborough, West, and Morell Rivers.
