Acting upon the information given to the Lecal Government, regarding the prev- alence of small-pox onthe north shore of the St. Lawrence, the Government has given jinstructions to Dr. Pidgeon, of Perce, to proceed there immediately, and to take the necessary sanitary measures for the prevention and treatment of the dis- ease.

Mr. Lee, one of the clerks of the Privy Council of Canada, arrived here yesterday morning, and was present on Mr, Langevin being sworn in by the Governor General as Minister of Public Werks. Mr. Langevin left for Ottawa in the afternoon by the Montreal! boat. . Orrawa, July 17. Last night a woman named Mrs. Fred- erick, whw lives in the vicinity of the deep cut, imbibed too freely and attempted to drown herself in the canal. She deliber- ately walked down to the bank and jumped into the water, but twe young men ob- served her and lost no time in going to her rescue.

During a severe thunder storm on Tues- day night, Mrs. Peter Rebertson, of La- chute, was killed by lightning, while driv- ing in the neighborhood ef her residence. Two persons whe were in the carriage with her escaped uninjured, but the herse was killed.

W. B. Hamilton’s boot and shoe factory, in this city, was partially destroyed by fire last. night. Loss about $90,000. Stock was insured for $60,000, machinery for $10,000, and the building for $15,000.

A photographic car was blown to splinters and the actist fatally injured.

A despatch from Augusta, Gav, ‘says :-— There has been no rain in this section to benefit the crops for two months; the corn in many places is burned up, and the crops will noteaverage a fourth ; cotton-is very much behind. This has been the hottest annd dryest weather since 1839.

Two officers of the U. S. steamer ‘‘Quin- nebang,” while going on Saturday ina small boat aboard that vessel, were stopped opposite the Palace by Turkisi: soldiers, and taken before the police auth>*ities and detained two heurs.

On Monday, after an energetic demand by the U«.S. Minister, the Turkish Naval Commander, in presence of the crew of the ‘‘Quinnebang,” made personal excuses, when the minister declared the ameide honorable complete.

Lord Cranbrook, speaking at a great Con- servative gathering in the Crystal: Palace, took a hepeful view of the future condition of trade, now so depressed. He defeaded the Afghan war, because it pacified a hitherto disturbed country. He believed Russia would falfil all engagements by treaty at

Serlin, and plea tud for time for the Porte to accomplish reforms in Asiatic Turkey on account of her many difficulties.

A meeting of Frenchmen in Londen, to- day, resolved. to erect a memorial to the late Prince Imperial on behalf of the French residents here.

MISCELLANEVUS DESPATCHES.

Parts, July 17.

It is reported that a disturbance has broken out in Bulgaria, in the neighbor- hood of Rasgood. Bands of insurgents alse appeared at Jambali, Eastern Roume- ia. Troops have been sent against the in- surgents.

[It is reported that several officers who attended the Requiem for the Prince Iin- perial have been removed and others sent to Algeria.

Garibaldi’s Divorce Suit.

According to the Italian papers, and es- pecially to the Capitale, which is understood to be fully informed in all that relates to Garibaldi, the General will appear before the Courts in a few days to obtain a decla- ration of the nullity of his marriage with the Signora Raimendi, celebrated in*Rome some fifteen or more years age. Immedi- ately after the marriage ceremony, and be- fore the bride had changed her dress, Gari- baldi received a letter telling him she had deceived him before marrying him. He laid the letter before her. She confessed ; they parted there and then, and. some months later the lady gave birth to a son. It was stated soon after Garibaldi’s arrival in Rome—and this news confirms it—that one of his chief objects was to obtain the settlement of the remainder of his pension on his children. membered that the Chamber voted him 100,000f. per annuum, with the remainder of 50,000f. per annum tod

his heirs, but who they were was not speci- fied—an oversight which was somewhat re- markable ia the circumstances. Garibaldi has two families of children but neither born in wedlock. The tirst were by Anita, who died in 1849 ; the second, Manlio and Clelia, by the Sigmora Francesca, born since his unfortunate marriage with Signora Raimondi. But, all these being illegitimate, the law cannot take ccgnizance of the their existence, and hence the curious complica- tion has arisen that it can only recognize as his legitimite son a young man who is no child of his, but who, as things are now, is entitled to sueceed to to the remainder of his pension, Garibaldi, therefore, seeks to obtain a decree of nullity of, his marriage with Signora Raimond, that he may prevent this, and, by marrying their mother, enable Manhe and Clelia to inherit the remainder. The following is an incident on the rc- cent return of some British officers from Afghanistan : Scene—The wildest part of the Khyber, with barren rocks towering on all sides; an Engiish officer riding along, escorted by a -motely company ef maliks and tribes—imen all armed to the teeth ; more, armed Afreedees in the middie dis- tance ; a weary, lonely figure on the dusty road in huge blackboots, face burned brick red and fringed’ by a scanty beard. The figure is clad in a thick wadded garment and has a bundle on its back.. ‘Halt! Who are you?” ‘A Turkestan.” ‘‘Where are your comrades?” ‘*Lam-alone.” ‘*Where are you going?’ ‘To Mecca.” ‘‘How will you. get there?’ ‘God will help,” ‘““Peacé be with you.” ‘‘And with you.” The figure moves off,'and the armed circle breaks up. This poor devotee had tramped hundreds of miles through hills and valleys, swarming with cutthroats, secure in his simple faith which had led him to leave dis- tant Turkestan in quest of the still more distant Mecca.

Deliver Those Oats.

Some time ago a farmer residing near St. Johns, P. Q:, sold to a merchant in Mon- treal alot of oats at 302. per bushel, upon which he obtained an advance of 25e., amounting +o $2,500. Net long afterwards, the market having improved, the farmer sald the same oats to another party at 305c., and on Thursday last gave the refusal of them to.a third buyer at 3le. until noon thé following day, but immediately sold them toa fourth party at Sle. The last purchaser, however, cowld not get delivery of the grain, as the first buyer at 30c. held the warehouse receipts, upon which he had advaficed $2,500. We understand that this quadruplicated sale of oats is likely to involve the seller in several law suits. and more than one of the parties concerned has demanded the delivery of ‘‘ those oats.”

The Messrs. Redpath have advanced price of granulated sugar ic per lb., and /c on low grade yellows. All other kinds of re- fined sugars are up je per lb. This general rise is due to a sharp advance in rew sugar in New York, said te be caused by the reperted failure of the beet root crop in Europe. Raw sugar on spot is in few hands, and for small lots a rise 4c is demanded.
