Quick Work.--Saturday last was divorce day in Judge Jamieson's court, Chicago. The Judge became tired of the droning of lawyers over inconsequential details, so he took the matter of getting at the facts into his own that another record was beaten and a mark set for (future judges to shoot at. In one hour the court had gone through thirty-five cases, of which six were tried—one every ten minutes.

Reveal or THe Scorr acr.—The petition calling for the repeal of the Scott Act in Frontenac, Ont., is, we learn from a recent de- spatch, signed by 2,019 persons, of whom 1,866 are sworn to be electors qualified to vote at the election of a member of the House of Commoms, which is 439 more than the re- quisite number. There are in the county 5,706 qualified electors, one-fourth of whom, (427, wre required on the petition, in order to have the question of repeal submitted to a vote.

Sxatep TO DeaTH.—A melancholy accident occurred at McDonald’s Point, Queen's, N.B., on Saturday last. Two bright little fellows— Ernest Wright and Ernest McDonald—aged respectively eight and yine years, went skat- ing on the river. There wasa stretch of open water in the stream, and the beys, over con- fident in the strength of the ice along the edge, skated gayly along quite-close to the margin. The ice suddenly gave way and they were plunged into the chilling ‘waters and drowned.

Mvsicat.—-Mr. Earle has been engaged by the Y. M. C. A. to give two grand concerts dnring the season—the first a secular concert early in January, the other a grand oratorio concert to be given in March. The success attending the series of concerts given by Mr. Earle three years ago, is a guarantee of the superiority of the music to be performed at these concerts. The choruses will cosist of upwards of thirty picked voices, and the in. stramental music promises to be of unusual excellence.

Hitisporoucu Rixx.—The waiting rooms having been nicely fitted up. a ' everything made ready for a pleasant winter's sport, the Hillsborough Rink will open for the season (weather permitting) on Christmas night. Admission to promenade, 10 cents; 15 cents extra to skate. In order to correct a misunder- standing which seeme to prevail, we may state that the price of children’s tickets (to: three afteynoons each week and Wednesday evenings) has been placed at the low rate of $2. Galbraith’s Band will be in attendance on’M mnday and Thursday evenings for adults, and on Saturday afternoons, from 4 until 6, for adults and children.

Goop Work.—The schooner Heloise, 89 tons register, with coal for C. Lyons, which ran ashore on Wood Island rocks, was picked up by the tug William Aitken at four a clock on Thursday afternoon. The schooner when found was on her beam ends on the rocks, with spars standing. After grapnelling for about three hours, the crew of the tug suc- ceeded in getting an anchor and several fathoms of chain. The schooner was then towed to Pictou, arriving there at about four @ ‘lock yesterday afternoon, and was given in charge of the authorities at the slip. Heloise wads @ comparatively new schooner,

Lonpon, Dec. 21.

In Committee on the Appropriation Bill, Gorst in the chair, Dr. Tanner offered an amendment, opposing a grant of £300 to Captain Segrave, Irish resident Magistrate. Gorst ruled the amendment out of order, as the grant had already passed the Com- mittee stage and had been approved by the House. Dr. Tanner proposed amendments to various parts of the till. Gorst ruled them all out of order.

Dr. Tanner excitedly protested against the chairman’s ruling. He said: ** When we are here in committee of.gupply, appro- priating money to a swindlé® thief and ser vent of the Irish Secretary, Mr. Balfour ought to be here, and not be suoh a coward as he is.” Gorst ordered Dr. Tanner to resume his seat and withdraw the word ‘*coward.”” Tanner retorted: ‘‘ I call him both a coward and a.diar.”

Goschen moved that Tanner be sus- pended. The House agreed without divi- sion, and Tanner left the chamber. ae
