A Very successful test of the Electric Light machinery was made, at the Works, corner Pownal and Water Streets, on Saturday evening, in presence of His Worship, Mayor Beer, a number of City Councillors snd several ladies and gentlemen. The engine and boiler which were set ap under the superintendence of Mr. Johnston, worked admirably, thirty pounds of steam being sufficient co run the dynamo with

At Plymonth to-day, a tenement house on Love Street took fire and a terrible calamity resulted The flames burned rapidly and fiercely, and when at last sub- dued, twelve calcined human bodies were found among the ruins. Two others are |missing, andin all probability have been burned to death.

The steamer King’s Cross, which arrived to-day from Denia, brought Capt. Sauterie, wife and crew of the schooner John Mce- Giaggan, of Chatham, N. B., from Summerside, P. E. I., for Philadelphia with potatoes. Captain Savterie reports : December 7, the schooner being in a sink- ing condition, sighted S. S. Uydenia, for Havre, who, with the greatest d'fliculy, rescued mysolf and wife and crew of six men. On the 9th we were safely trans- ferred to the 8S. S. King’s Cross.

Terrible Railway Accident,

Ktxaston, Ont., Dec. 12.

Vhile John Walker, of Glenturne, ac- companied by his wife, was driving across the Grand Trunk track this morning, the horse became frightened at the whistle of the approaching train and turned sharply. Mrs. Walker was thrown from the buggy and run over and killed by the train, the body being terribly mangied.
