Late blight. always one of the most serious of all potato diseases in Canads.'has apparently met its master. D elopment of a blight- reslstant potato. announced today by the Canada Department of Agriculture, is of vital economic importance to the nation's tuiber industry. according to officials of the department's Division of Hor- ticulture. Two new varieties, prov- en highly resistant to late blight in field tests across Canada. have been established after more than .17 years of research and , testing with 90.000 or more different seedlings..N0w in the process of being "censed for sale. the variet- ies are Canso and Keswlck. Both are available this fall to certified seed growers.

No definite figures are availaibie on Canada's annual loss due to late blight but N. M. Parks. of the Horticultural Division. Central Experimental Farm. Ottawa. calls it "considerable." Under conditions favorable to it. the disease reaches epidemic proportlonsin some areas and often destroys entire crops. United States losses due to late blight average 10,000,000 bushels annually.

Available quantities will be de- termined when the crop is har- vested. but applications for the certified seed of Game and Kes- wick varieties. on prescribed forms, are being accepted now in minimums of 10 bushels for one or 20 for both varieties. by the Div- lsion of Horticulture. Gasoline and kerosene whole- sale prices were cut seven-tenths of a cent in Ontario and thePraiirie

rovinces. and four-tenths of a Cent in Quebec. the Maritimes and Newfoundland.

Furnace. stove and other light fuel oils were reduced half a cent a gallon in Ontario and thePrairles and two-tenths of a cent in Que- bec, the Mairitimes and New. foundland.

The company said appreciation of the Canadian dollar in terms of other currencies resulted in lower costs for crude oil and imports. Higher ocean freight rates ne- cessitated the smaller reductions in Quebec. the Marltimes and Newfoundland.

The Women's Missionary Societies of the O'Leary and Bloomfield Churches have always kept in touch with Dr. Murray and sent her bales, gifts, etc., to all of which she has gratefully acknowl- edged.
