At the last Southampton show in England Jersey cows made a_ notable display, both ‘as to numbers and qual- ity. build would have been vpowhere at a fair in the United States, but ideals lifer. Jt was that beefy build itself, added to her unusual size, that helped Gipsy Queen II get first prize. She is of a fawn color and is 5 years old. <A de- scription of the cow in the London Live Stock Journal praisee her capacious ud- der. ‘io the American eye, however, her udder is the reverse of capacious.
Cement Floor For Stable.
My barn is 30 by 51, no basement. Running through the center js ap alley 8 feet wide, cows standing facing out. Back of them on each side of the alley is a trench 16 inches wide and 8 inches deep, a decline from side of barn to treuch of 2 inches.
This, with a Bidwell stall, gives a feeding alley in front of the cows of about 3 feet. While it is claimed that the cows would not back out over the trench, I, for more security, have a rope with a snap back of each one.
The entire floor is grouted and made as follows: Underneath all is a layer of stone, then 8 inches of broken stone, covered with 4 inches of good grout, made of two parts of clear cut sand and one part good water lime made thin enough to thoroughly fill all space be- tween the stone and well tamped, then covered witb three-fourths ef an inch of cement.
On top edge of trench use a 2 by 4 Norway pine, anchored with strap irom —this to prevent the edges chipping off. Use a straight edge putting on the cement and be sure not to let it dry too quickly. I use a sprinkler pot and wet the floor every day for at least ten days. Also do not let the sun reach it in dry- ing. It must dry slowly to prevent cracking. Mine, after three years’ use, does not show the first crack.
In the trench I usechaff or land plas- ter as an absorbent, and the trench be- ing water tight everything is saved. The alley is wide enough to drive through, and manure is taken out at once to the farm.
My barn is the above size, as I had just such a place for it, and gives me 20 stalls, a box stall, a calf pen and two feed boxes. *he entire room above is for storage of bhay.—E. M. McChes- ney in Hoard’s Dairyman.
