Freicuts.—North Sydney, May 17.—G. H. Dobson & Co.—Since our our last report no improvements have taken place in our freight market, which is very dull.

Hopes were entertained that on the opens ing ofthe Canals and the St. Lawrence freights would improve, but the heavy fleet of vessels reported on their way to our shores have a tendency to keep down rates for some time unless a considerable decline takes place athome or an advance in fereign markets.

We have had considerable seeking tonnage during the past week, principally large, which have bcen quietly’ absorbed in the trars-Atlantic business, mostly to load grain at Montreal and Baltimore.

Coal continues dull, having no orders from the American market, our trade is principally confined to provincial require- ments.

The current rates for coal freights are :— Montreal! $2,25, Quebec, $2,00, Newfound- land, $2,50, American ports, $2 to $2,25, West Indies, €¢5,50, Para and Brazillian ports, $5 to 5,50, Mediterrenean, 7,08. In long voyages we remark bark Albert Russel, Singapore at $7,00 am. gold. ,

Lumbe= requirements are rather limited still we can use a few vesssels of medium size from Montreal and St. Lawrence ports for the River Plate, at S18 to 18,5C net p. m, and from Southern ports $19 to 20 and prims age.

“Deal vessels are in fair demand, though ratesare inclinnd to favor shippers. We quote Miramichi, F-chibucto, Dalhousie, 72s 6d, St. Margarets 70s, Quebec, 75s to 77s 6d, St. John, 72s 6d to75s, Doboy, St. Mary’s 110s to 120s, Pensacola, Fiorida, 120s to 130, Pascagoula 130s to ' 30s.

During the past week we have closed a park 550 deal, Richibucto to Liverpool, 72s 6d, and one of 395 tons for Doboy, or Bruns- wick, to Cork or Falmouth for orders, U. K,, 115s.

Timber freight continues dull, rates can be quoted— Quebec, U. K., 28s to 30s, Pitch pine from Southern Atlantic ports 37s 6d to 40s. Gnif 428 6d to 45s, tothe continent 47s 6d, Marseilles or Genoa 50.

HE Members of the Prince Edward Is- land Rifle Association, are requested by the President, to meet atthe office of the Secretary, in the Barracks, on Wednesday, the 19th inst., at 11 o’clock in the forenoon, for the purpose of electing a President and Secretary, in place of the present officers, and for the reorganization of the society prior to its affiliation with the Dominien of Canada Rifle Association.
