Iete.xs, which form on the eaves of build- ings in this city, are a continual source of ter- ror to tbe man who chooses the platform to walk upon. Of late these icicles have assumed un- usually prodigious proportions, and often sus- pended from the eaves of lofty buildings, per- haps, by nothing more than a few fibres, they threaten destruction to the unwary pedes- triap. On Queen atreet, the eaves of a large namber of houses are fringed with these dan- gerous ice masses. We would warn our read- ers in passing the streets, to give a little at- tention to them.

A wWELL-KNowN and wealthy farmer of Thurlow, Onatario, has disappeared under circumstances that cause his friemds much pain. It appears that as usual in such cases, there is a woman concerned, although the ab- sconding Lothario is well over the years of youth. A fascinating young milliner, who had service in the farmer's house, suc- ceeded in winning bis affections, and in order to carry out his evil intent, he raised money by dishonorable oeans, and, it is reported, mortgaged: his farm for a large amount, forged a deed to property not his own, and by other such disreputable means succeeded in getting together a large sum of money, reported as much as $14,000. With this sum in his pocket, he quietly stole away, his lady-love having preceded him, possibly by a pre-arrangement. He leaves a wife and famiiy, who, owing to dishonest proceedings, will be placed in straightened circurastances.

AccrpEent.~-As the British Colonial barque ‘*Malinche,” Crptain Gallant, from Prince Edward Island, with oats, was being moored yesterday in the harbor, one of the seamen on board, named Mecarvill, got his leg jammed between the wind)ass and the chain and had it broken. He wns removed to the Queens- town Hospital, where his injuries were attend- ed to by Dr. Benson,—Cork (freland) Exam- iner, Dec. 27th, 1879.

The Summerside Journal says: MeCarvill belonged to Charlottetown and not to Sum- merside as has been reported. The ‘‘ Mal- inche” belongs to Angus Martin, Esq., of this place and is the vessel in which Mr. Morrison and wife, Miss Knight and Mr. Stavert took passage from this place for England. The many friends of these per- sons will no doubt, be glad to hear of their quick passage and safe arrival at Cork on the 29th ult.

A Loxpoyx, Ontario East, man, named Thomas Johnston, by his attorney, Frank Love, has created a consternation among the building societies of London, Hamilton and Toronto, claiming from them sums that, if they are compelled to pay, will, in all proba- bility, cause their suspension. It seems that the law requires tat anaffidavit shall be mace setting forth that the society officers have the means of verifying, and have verified, the re turns sent to the Government. In the affida- vits made it is stated that the words ‘‘and have verified” have been omitted, and on this Johnston seeks the penalty involved, which is $100 for every day that has elapsed since the returns were made. New IxivsrnaredD Historica, ATLAs OF P. k. 1.—It seldom falls to the ‘ot of a jour- nalist to be calle upon to express an opinion upon such a work as the above. Through the courtesy of Mr. Meacham, we have been favored with aw examination of a copy of his new Atlas, aud avhesitatingly pronounce it ene deserving of unqualified praise in every particular. The binding, which is both ele- gant and substantial, reflects great credit on the binders—Messrs. Bremner Bros., and the letter-press, executed in the office of the Summerside Jovrnal, is another feather in the cap of its enterprising proprietors. Be- sides the usually understood contents of an Atlas, we are furnished with an accurate and interesting history of our Island, a number of biographical sketches of prominent individu- als, views of public and private buildings, and numerous portraits, all produced in the best style. Of the Atlas proper, we cannot speak toohighly. The separate maps of each lot, were the contents of the Atlas confined to these, would, in our opinion, be amply worth the price at which the whole isissued ($12.50. ) In them one secs at a glance the situation of every farmin the lot. its size. name of pro- prietor, and boundary line—information which must ever be welcome to the professional or business man, farmer or student. The corpses of 50 victims of the explosion iin Lycett Colliery have been recovered. Of 12 taken ont 9 have died and others are i dying.

A despatch from Cabul says matters are very unsettled. An outbreak is possible at any tine and it is almost certain to be as soon as the snow melts.

Mahomed Jan is very popular among the Afghans who will willingly follow him again whencalled upon. They donot ad- mit defeat, and say they only dispersed be- cause they had nocannon with which to dislodgs the British frem Shirpur, but that next time they wil! bring cannon.

Supreme Court. JANUARY, 22,

The Queen vs. James Blackburn and Jack- son. ‘This was a prosecution for house-break- ing and larceny—tor breaking into the town residence of Williaz: Welsh, Ksq., and taking some hock, Jime-juice and ginger-ale bettles. The prisoners were defended by KE. J. Hodg- son, Q. C.

‘The chief witness for the prosecution was a little hoy—Patrick McAree, nine years ef age. Under cross-examination, he stated that he watched the entry into the cellar from the front gate; but it appeared that to have watched thus, he must have been able to have seen through two walls of the house.

Mr. Hedgson made a powerful and affecting appeal to the Jury, and when he made the little boys stand up in the dock, their heads were just visible above the low front of the dock. He begged the Jury to send the boys home “o their mothers, and not send them to the prison where, by contact with the most hardened criminals, they ,would come out again, hardened criminals.

The Attorney General having replied, the Judge charged the Jury, who took the merci- ful view suggested by Mr. Hodgson, and found the prisoners ‘‘ Not Guilty.”

Mitchell vs. Bowers. The Jury in this case returned to the Court about ten o'clock to- night, and having failed to agree were ‘lis- charged. It is reported that on the first issue two ef the Jury believed the note to have been forged. Four were of opinion that it had never been delivered by the defendant, while the remainder held that it had been both signed and delivered. The other two issues were not considered, it being first necessary to decide the first point.

The plaintiff elaamed something like forty dollars. ‘The trial has occupied the attention of the Court for three days ; forty-eight Jury- men at a dollar a day each have been in daily attendance ; the High Sheriff, his Deputy, and and a number of special constables wete busy keeping the Court in order and the gods quiet and the suit is now farther from being {settled than ever it was. The Government. would have been in pocket had they paid the debt and costs at first.

The Queen vs. William Wheeler. This is an indictment for stealing a wagon from Theo- dore Abbott, Unien Road. A number of wit- nesses have been examined for the prosecution which is not through at the time we go to press, —
