Ovrrvary.—James Moffatt, Esq., has had news by wire of the death of his son James, in Kansas, of malarial fever. We deeply sympathize with the bereaved family in their sudden affliction, and the'loss of a very estini- able young man, who only left this Island about a year ago. The writer knew him to be one of the most upright, honorable, and worthy boys, always willing to lend his means and energies to any just cause. His remains are being brought home for inter- ment.

SHovtp Serr Werir.—We have been shown a copy of a very useful work, just published, **‘ The Dominion Customs Ready Reckoner and Importer’s Guide,” by John Bennett Strong, of Halifax. Mr. Strong is here in the interest of his book, and is receiving names and delivering copies of

the same. He informs us that, although born in Charlottetown, he has been absent

about 3O years, and notices, with pride, the increase and improvements during that period, in his native place.

NEWFOUNDLAND Fisnerizs.—Adolphe Niel- son has resigned his position under the gov- ernment of Norway and accepted the office of superintendent of tisheries of Newfoundland. His first duty will be to establish a codfish hatchery on the Newfoundland coast. Last eumme: the French vessels Amazon and Vir- ginia were seized, forfeited and condemned, and the owners fined $200 each for violating the Newfoundland bait act. The decision of the magistrates was appealed from to the supreme court and Judge Little has just rendered judgment, sustaining the $200 fine, but reversing the decision of confiscation.

This is, we understand, the last trip of the Halitax this season. Since coming on this route she has done a very good passenger and freight traffic. Captain Hill and his able staf of officers have made many friends here, who trust that they may spend a pleasant winter and return next season even better than ever prepared for work. Another body, that of Ernest Casper, has just been found in the ruins.

Thos. N. Hart (Republican) the citizens’ candidate, was elected Mayor to-day, by about 1600 plurality in a total vote of over 6,000, defeating Mayor O’Brien (Democrat) who ran forthe fourthterm. Enough votes have been already counted to indicate the election of the entire Republican School Committee, and the consequent condemna- tion of the conduct of the present commit- tee in withdrawing from the schools text books offensive to Catholics. The license majority is about 17,000.

Later.—Hart’s majority is 1700. The entire Republican ticket for School Com mittee is elected. The composition of the board of aldermen and council is about the same as last year.

Babson in bond to Boston, the Custom House officials explain that the vessel came in here for re- pairs with a perishable cargo of fresh hali- but. Capt. Thompson explained the perish- able nature of his cargo and asked permis- sion to tranship it in bond. The special circumstances of the §case were similar to half a dozen others reported during the past year, and which induced the depart- ment to make special concessions of the privilege of transhipment. Cox, Bursar of Victoria University, saying he will give $100,000 towards the Endowment Fund of the University as a separate insti- tution, conditional on its remaining at Co- bourg, provided that the additional sum of $400,000 be raised within five years to- wards a like object. Mr. Massey pro- mises to give $5,000 a year for five years to the University unconditionally.
