In the winter of 1868, half a dozen men erected a wooden shanty near Salmon Cove. just south of the harbor of St. Johns, Newfoundland.

They were strangers to the people around, were civil, quiet and indus-} trious.

They kept themselves to themselves, and employed their leisure in fishing when the weather permitted.

Thouch subsequent to their daring had been freqnent, and many of them attended with thrilling ine‘dents, still suspected the strangers of any parti cipation in them. |

This vobbery was involved in mach mystery.

The house was oceapied by the farm- er, his wife, two sons and three daugh- ters, besides two servant-women who slept below on the tirst floor.

Four farm hands slept in an adjoin- ing building, and a dog kept watch in the yard.

When the household awoke inthe morning they found that thieves had been in. The servant women were gagged, and tied hand and foot in their bed. The watch-~log was dead with- out any apparent cause,

The servants stated that two men, masked, with dark lanterns, entered their room while they were asleep. One was awoke by some one’ tying her feet She was about to seream when a man at the foot of the bed pointed his revolver at her, and told her to be still or he would fire. They were both bound and gagged when the robbers left’ them. They could hear them moving--about but dared not make any noise for fear of their lives,

Snow had fallen through the night, and foot-prints were traced in it to the shore of Lake Quidi Vidi, and there lost.

The tramps evidentiy had taken a boat there.

The Iake shore was searched for

further tracks. None were found till the parties reached the stream’ by which the lake partly empties itself into the harbor of St. Johns at Maggoty Cove. ere the tramps had landed sand walked down the stream to the teove where they must have embarked peain. ‘ Lhe police were informed that foot- ‘prints had been seen at the boat-shelter ‘ofr the south side of the harbor, and traced to the cabin of the strangers. The police waited till night, so that they would catch the fish in their own net.’

At the hour appointed the police sur- rounded the cabin. The sergeant de- manded admittance. The door was opened and the police entered.

“What is the meaning of this in- trusion ?” inquired one of the inmates,

The sergeant explained.

“Then what do you take us for ?” in- terrogated the spokesman, indignantly.

“I am simply performing my duty. sir. And if you feel aggrieved, you can appeal to the police-court to-mor- row.’

“T shall see to it,” replied the spokes- man indignantly.

The Aabin was searched but nothing was found that could implicate the fishermen with any of the robberies,

They accounted for the foot-prints to their cabin, with the explanation that some of them had gone to the ha bor to see to the seeurity of their boat | moored there.

The police feit, satisfied of the inio- cence of the fishermen.
