boats. This is «a subject in which I, in common with every one interested in the fishing business, fee: a deep concern. I therefore submit the following, believing it to be far in advance of the model suggested by Mr. Fishery Inspector Duvar :

Every fishing boat might be so construct- ed that she could with safety cross the Atlantic. It would be quite simple. By a light deck, partly on hinges, a fourth of her length at each end fixed, the remaining part amidships bya covering board on each side, one-fourth of the beam also tixed, the boat having very little shear.

The rowlocks would require to be raised, for the dip of the oar. A water tight box, 18 inches deep aud 20 wide, weuld be requisite to cross the boat, at the stern Sheets, for the helmsman’s feet. Such a boat would be more comfortable than the common boat, and as she might be eight inches lower, the additioual weight would not be more than seventy-five pounds, and the cost not five dollars more, on a boat of twenty feet. For bottoms, there are no finer models in the world than the boats on the Atlantic shore of Nova Scotia. Every country has its own peculiar boat to boast of—the Mudian boats of the West Indies, the Deal boats of England, the Kinsale hookers of Ireland and the Buckie boats of Scotland—- the» hardiest of all; but their mouths are all too large, and when one of those storms Which only comes in a lifetime, overtakes a fleet of any of them at sea, the wail of widows and orphans on shore attest the reckless disregard of human life that ob- tains amongst those who send such craft to sea, and those who man them.

She will be named the ‘* Servia,” her tonnage will be 7,500, and her indicated horse power 10,000. The other steamer is being built by Elder & Co, of Glasgow, for the Guion Line. Her ton- nage will be about 6,500 horse-power, being similar in power to the ‘ Servia.”

Our National Magazine, the Canadian Monthly, for October, opens with an his- torical paper of much interest on ‘ Anna- polis Royal and the Expatriation of the Acadians, from the pen of Mr. Arthur Harvey, of Toronto. The other papers of importance in the number are Mr. Thomas Hodgins’ dissertation on ‘ The Prerogative of the Crown in Colonial Legislation ; Mr. Manigault’s article entitled ‘What is Money?’ and Mr. E. Lafleur’s enquiry inte ‘The Principle of Copyright.’ These papers, which form the backbone of the number, are varied in their interest and thoughtful in their treatment. Of lighter articles, the two stories, ‘ Clinker,’ and ‘ In the Shadow of Death,’ wiil be found ex- ceedingly readable, while the paper on ** Eccentricities of a Boarding House’ will also be found entertaining and amusing. Died, at Souris, on the 9th inst., John Gregory, aged 68 years. Mr. Gregory was a native of Bristol, England, and can:e to this Island many years ago, along with his father, who was the head blacksmith in Cambridge’s shipyard at Souris West De- ceased was a metnber of the Methodist Chnrch for over a quarter of a century. many sterling qualities. A believer in comparative Christian perfeotion, he aimed at being a possessor as_ well as professor of religion. By some he may have been con- sidered over-strict, but by those who knew him best, his live was beyond reproach. He leaves a wife and large family to mourn the loss of one endeared to them by many sacred associations which say : ‘‘ Remem- ber the words which I spoke unto you while I was yet with you.” His remains were accompanied to their last resting place on Monday last by a large and respectable con- course of people of different denominations. Services were conducted yby Rev. Messrs. Cameron and and Stebbings. Thus has another old and respected resident passsed away. ‘‘ Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.”
