He invited several proml- nent Methodist ministers to come on a visit, and, very much to their sur- prise, offered to give them the ground am which to build a large church.
Of course this ptece of magnanimity was eagerly accepted, and drew down upom his head the everlasting thanks xt the whole denomination. The work was commenced at once, and was soon completed, under the care of the newly made convert, who took particular pains to have the building erected im full view of the Episcopal rectory,
Little did the Methodists know with what malignant satisfaction the pro- jector of this scheme gloated Over the success of his plot, and the terrible anguish of spirit that the Reverend Mr, Caldwell suffered then and during the remainder of his life.
A brilliant young minister was duly installed im the new church ,and soon became the spiritual light of the dis- trict over which he presided. He was a bright, handsome young man, and had the goood fortune to be unmar- ried. This made him a genera] favor- ite at my unele’s house, for reasons which will appear presently.
