SOCCER PANTHERS BEGIN SEASON WELL

The UPEI Men’s Soccer Pan- thers begin their season on a happy note with a 2-1 victory over the University of Monc- ton Blue Angels last Sunday at MacAdam Field in Charlotte- town.
The first half of the game saw a solid defensive game be- ing played by the Panthers as Moncton was unable to beat the UPEI backfield, and those shots that did get through were eas- ily knocked aside by goalkeeper Adrian Harrison. In the later pat of the half the Panthers missed a couple of excellent scoring oppor- tunities as a couple of shots from just inside the box sailed wide of the net.
About 10:00 into the half and 55 minutes into the games Pe- ter Wolters crossed the ball into the goalmouth area where Janus Barna was just able to get. his head on it, redirecting it to Monc- ton goalkeeper Marcel Richard.
Moncton finally was able to break through the UPEI defense midway through the second half and get some good scoring op- portunities. A debatable penalty call inside the box gave Monc- ton’s Pierre Pelletier a penalty
kick which he converted on as he caught Adrian Harrison guessing wrong.
Towards the end of the half it was beginning to like to game would end in a tie, but good ball control by the Panther midfield and by. Janus Barna were able to set up Phillip Visser with five minutes remaining and give the Panthers the victory.
The Panthers played a.strong game against a vastly improved Moncton team. Coach Andy Cameron was pleased with the

Panthers’ efforts although parts of their game were still rusty.
Coach Cameron also said that this weeks practices will include alot of fitness and coordination as next weekend the Panthers will face the Dalhousie TIgers on Sat- urday and the Acadia Axemen on Sunday. Both games are at MacAdam Field at 2:00pm.
