Joupep From Tazt Wixvnow.—A dranken lumberman, named Chas. Skidd, hailing from Miramichi, jamped trom a hotel window at Indiantown, St. John, on Wednesday night. When he was picked up and examined, it was found that his left thigh was broken, and that he was pretty badly shaken up.

| De Giers Honored. Sr. Perersspure, Oct. 25. | To-day was the fiftieth anniversary of the entrance of M. De Giers, the foreign juunister, into the pubhe service, and a j reception was held at the foreign office in | honor of the event. The heads of the | fureign embassies presented M. De Giers with «a gold inkstand. To-morrow Gen. Van Schweinitz, the German ambassador, | will ive a banquet to De Giers, at which ili furcign diplomats will be present. The | Journal de St. Petersburg this morning reters tothe great coutidence which the Czar places in De Giers, whose only desire has been, it says, tu be of faithful service to his master, and to Russia.

Robbing the Mails.

Cuicaco, Oct. 25. The mail pouch which left Boston on

img over the Michigan Svutheru railroad, was robbed of ail the first-class mail mat- ter it contained. The stolen package con- sisted vi registered letters, and the suppo- sition is that a large amount of money was secured by the thief. The bag had been cut open, the thiet taking the package con- | tainiug first-class matter ouly. This leads ito the belief that the perpetrator of the rubbery was some one connected with the pustal service.

Preeper Nentenced.

Hawirax, Oct. 25. William Preeper has been sentenced to hang January 15th next for the murder of Peter Doyle. The judge refused to sus- peud seutence, pending appeal to the Su- preme Court of Canada,

The following is taken from the Boston | Heralds divorce court proceedings of | Wecnesday. Margaret Shea says that. she | Was married to Join M. Shea at Charlotte- jtown, P. E.1L., in 1883. One year later

they came to Boston. John is a sailor, and while in port was cruel and abusive, so his | wife and her wiinesses said. She went tu | different plices in her endeavors to avoid him. Ou one occasion he assulted her on ithe street and tore off her dress. John | Shea, the husband, tolda different story. He says that he liveson Prince street at the present time. He said he never struck or abused his wife or raised his hand against her, except in self-defence. He explained i that the tearing of clothes, as sworn to by |his wife, was simply the coming off in his hand of ber bustle. Jvuhn further charged his wife with having lived at No. 2 Concord place with a mau named Stanley whom she (had been passing off on him as ber brother

acknowledged her guilt, but agreed to go and live with him again at some other place if he would mike no disturbance around the Concerd place house. Records were introduced to prove that Shea was con- victed for assault and battery on his wife March 30,1886, and sentenced to fine and imprisonment. An attempt was made by counsel for husband tu set up a condonation of the alleged cruel and abusive treat- ment, because the parties had lived to- gether since the date of iil treatment, as specified in the wife’s libel. Judge Pit- man touk the case under consideration.
