If you are riding a wheel and see a pedestrian uncertain which way he will move, stop short; for he is likely to jump in front of your wheel when it is too late to avoid him.

Indeed, nearly all accidents in the shape of collisions with pedestrians are from one of these two causes.

A New Cycle.

Last week a number of Toronto people were surprised by the appearance on our streets of what appeared a single bicy- cle with two riders. It was a double machine, but the riders, instead of sit- ting one behind the other in tandem style, sat beside one another, much in the same way as on the old sociable tri- cycle. The machine is the invention of a Mr. Weaver of Hamilion, who had it in Toronto last week exhibiting it to the manufacturers with the purpose of selling the patent. Our illustration will enable the reader to readily under- stand the construction of the machine, though many cannot understand how two riders of unequal weight will be able to manage it. The weight of the riders does not appear to make any ma- terial difference, and, in fact, Mr. Will Hyslop rede the wheel alone. The only particular advantage we see in it is that the riders can more easily carry on conversation, but against this are the disadvantages of greater space required for passing other vehicles and the much wider circle cut in turning round.— Cycling.

Ricycie Force.

A French scientist has recently made some expe iments which show the a- mount of force Geveloped by some of the bicycle ¢€ xperts in a hard race. Win- ale and Zimmerman have maintained for two minutes a speed to continue which required the expenditure of ener- gy representing two thirds of one-horse power. For six seconds they were able to exert the astonishing force of one and a fourth horse power. This is equivalent to raising a weight of 18s pounds one yard high in a second. This isa conservative estimate. owing to the inefficiency of the coefficients of powei used in making the calculations.

Experiments are also being made to determine the force exerted by the dif- ferent sports. These results will be of use for training asa hygienic data. One of the discoveries made during the cal- culation of the force exercised by bicyc- lists is that at high speeds the work of a bicyclist in covering a specified dis- tance is as great as that of a man run- ning the same distance. Ata moderate speed a runner undergoes three times the labor of a bicyclist, but the highe> the speed the nearer the exertions are equalized,

Te Carry Mails on Steam Tricycles’

W. P. Miller of this city received a telegram: this morning announcing that he was the successful bidder for the mail route between Ukiah and Harris. Harris is ninety miles north. Mr. Miller’s bid of $7,777 was over $100 less than the other bidders’. Mr. Miller is disposing of all his old stage lines now and will give his whole attention to the Ukiah and Harris route. He has placed an order for two six-horse-power gasolinc tricycles, which he will use instead of horses. Mr. Miller says the tricycles work finely. He expects to have them here soon. Mr. Miller’s contract runs for three years. This is the only stage line in the United States which will bx run by steam tricycles, and the experi- ment will be waiched with interest all over the country. They will have room for passengers and mail and will have a speed of from three to twelve miies per hour. The route these machines will be placed on will give them a thor- ough test, as there is a great deal of mountain road to travel.—San Fran- cisco Examiner.

Promises galore have been made from time to time that some great man would shortly introduce a cycle that would revolutionize the world in point of speed ; these have never been kept and the people in general, cyciers in parii- cular, have learned to view with an eye of distrust any such statement.
