Tue well-known gun factory of Sir William Armstrong & Co., at Elswick, Newcastle-on- Tyne, has, it is stated, handed over to the authorities a number of their heaviest breech- loading guns, which have been manufactured specially for the defences of Canada.
Riots IN | R&LAND. — Reinforcements of the constabulary force were, on the 15th inst., ordered to proceed to Coal Island, County Meath, in consequence of the July riots at Newry, County Meath. A sub-inspector of police has been shot.
Civic.—We are authorized to state that Theeph. Des Brisay, Esq., will be a Candidate for the office of Mayor in the coming election. As will b seen by reference to advertising columns, Mr. J. W. Mitchell is in the field for Ward five.
Mr. E. F. Dawson, C. E. of the Royal Kast India Civil Service, arrived home on Satur. day evening from England via Halifax, ona short visit to his parents before going to India this fall. This young gentleman is a son of W. E. Dawson, Esq., ion of this city.
Jouys Horne was charged before Theoph. DesBrisay to-day with assaulting’and threat- ening mr Toombs. As it appeared to bea very small matter, Mr. H. was nominally fined 25 cents, and ordered to find sureties to keep the peace and be of good behaviour for twelve months.
Repuction or Rents in IRELAND. — Lord Listowel has intimated his intention of redu- cing his rents in the County Kerry fifty per cent. Reports of the crop prospects through- out Ireland are eneetiiety favorable. All that is wanted is dry, warm weather to ensure an abundant, though late harvest.
On the termination of the present sittings of the War Office Committees, Sir Patrick Macdougall will return to Halifax, N.S. Lord Napier, of Magdala, who has also been a member cf the same committees with Sir Pat- rick, returns to Gibralter to resume his com- mand of the forces there.
Ar the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court, this forenoon, Joha McAree, charged with stealing fifty dollars from Miss O’Brien,—his aunt,-— was remande:| to jail for eight days, or until the return of Miss O'Brien to the city. Solomon Collins, drunk and incapable, was fined $4, or 20 days; James Malone, for the same offense, was fined $2 and costs, or 14 days. Frederick Bevan was ordered to pay $5 damages to Mr. Angus D. Martin, for the use of a wagon which he took from Mr. Mar- tin’s premises without permission.
Supreme Court, GEORGETOWN.—In_ the case of Frederick LePage vs. the Canada Fire aud Marine lusurance Company, an action to recover the arnount of a fire imsurance policy on a house at Eldon, the Jury returned a ver- dict of $840.00 forthe plaintiff. The Grand Jury returned a true bill against Margeret McDonald for obtaining goods from A. C. ’ McDonald and others, under false pretences. Trial will take place at the next session of the Court.
Pornr pu CuHene.—The Sackville Post con- tains the following :—‘‘A few American ves- sels have called Late to order sails, having had some of their sails carried away by the squall of some ten days ago; some of thei have gone out and others are ee for sails and gear, when they will repair to the fishing grounds. The prospects are reported good, some very fine catches having been made. Should the weather prove a success, it will make stirring times during August and Sep- tember. At present. according to reports, everything bids fair to reward the fishermen.
Zera.—As will be seen by referring to our advertising columns, Professor Zera gives three performances in this city, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings of this week. Of his recent performances in Summerside, the| Progress says : —‘* Professor Zera, the wizard and ventriloquist, gave three entertainments in Ludlow Hall, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. So great was the attrac- tion that the audience grew larger each night, Some of the veatriloquist illusions were really wonderful, and elicited loud applause. Many valuable presents were given away each even- ing at the close of the performance.”
